@DoctorPerin I respect Kernberg but therapy is still in it's infancy and this is form a 96 (albeit, sharp) year old man. Best to come up with your own opinions.

@DoctorPerin He said this advice for psychoanalytic psychotherapists, not for CBT practitioners. He also says that he has limited experience working with Cognitive behavioral therapists but he is impressed with some of their results.

@DoctorPerin I also find CBT annoying because they want to skip all the rigor and just fix the problem but what if occams razor applies and the most logical and simplest solution is the best one

@DoctorPerin Isn't addressing an irrational thought pattern a process of addressing the unconscious problem. Like retarded and irrational thinking isn't done consciously so CBT is skipping all the fancy childhood analysis and psych terms to actually address the problem not the cause

@FoldingNapkins @AhmadRehanKhan i think harmful behavior is what makes a "false" belief a delusion. Once someone believes they are being persecuted then they become a danger to others. Think of the jews and the muslims. they are delusional about this "holy land"

"Fixed, false beliefs held despite clear contradictory evidence and a lack of logical support" does paint rather a broad swathe though. At that degree of granularity you could classify anyone with a religious belief as some degree of delusional, as long as you didn't agree with it. Can I ask what the threshold is for something to go from a cognitive bias or simple stubbornness into active delusion? From a psychological perspective. Presuming some degree of social impairment or harmful behaviour is required but that too can be a difficult judgement to make.

If you actually worked in mental health, as a psychologist or psychiatrist, you’d know that delusions are not “different realities.” They are fixed, false beliefs held despite clear contradictory evidence and lack of logical support. This isn’t a philosophical debate, it’s a well-defined clinical concept. As a philosopher this isn’t your area of expertise, it’s important to approach it with caution and avoid presenting inaccurate interpretations as facts.
Justin Garson@justin_garson

I’m starting to question the very concept of ‘delusions’: the very act of labeling you as delusional implies a superiority on my part - that my grasp of reality is superior to yours in a way that does not merit argumentation. Why would that ever be an appropriate stance to adopt?

@AhmadRehanKhan clear contradictory evidence and lack of logical support is subjective though. When he was a sickly child no1 thought he would make the ufc. 8 years ago no one thought he would be a world champion. Sure someone saying aliens are watching him is probly delusional but we don't know

@Hans4ever @ShitpostReels True. If you lack family and friends in PA then you start doing meth, atleast in better places you can do cocaine, strippers, and other forms of higher pleasures

@ShitpostReels I mean, it's true dude. Every time I'm in central PA, I realize how shitty this country is for some people. Imagine not having a store on every corner? Being forced to drink Coal water? Having to hang out with people from Pennsylvania? I'd probably end up playing in traffic, too

@Ahdunni147 @OrevaZSN what is his ego is inflated but low self-esteem serves to protect him from the wakeup call that he is ordinary.. like if he acted on his beliefs that he was better than others then he would risk failure.

@OrevaZSN That's called a defense mechanism. The ego builds a fortress because the self-esteem is in shambles inside. You act superior so no one sees how much you actually hate yourself. It's exhausting to maintain.

What is it called when your self esteem is extremely low, but your ego is high? I mean, you hate yourself, but you still think you’re better than everyone else.

This is a phenomenon that’s very common among humans. We’re drawn to symbols that represent traits we feel we’re missing and want to develop. For example, amongst the Yakuza someone who’s too quiet or meek might get a tiger tattoo to push them toward being more bold and assertive. Someone who’s too aggressive or hot headed might go for something like an octopus which represents calmness and smarter more level headed thinking.
