UTB students win third place at GWECCC Hackathon The University of Technology Bahrain (UTB) achieved a milestone as its Environmental Engineering students secured third place at the Sustainability Hackathon, co-organised by INJAZ Bahrain during the Global Water, Energy and Climate Change Congress (GWECCC 2025). The competition brought together over 100 students from leading GCC universities, with UTB the only university from Bahrain to place in the top three, alongside winners from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. The winning team — Wed Radhi, Fay Juma, Sakeena Hussain, and Ahmed Isa, supervised by Dr Dalal Al Alaiwat, Head of Environmental Engineering — presented a detailed roadmap for Bahrain to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2060, covering policies, alternative energy, costs, challenges, mitigation strategies, and funding. Their visionary yet practical plan was praised as both actionable and innovative. The award was presented by Dr Mohammed bin Mubarak Bin Dainah, Minister of Oil and Environment and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, in the presence of Dr Diana Abdulkarim Al Jahromi, Secretary General of the Higher Education Council. UTB also had strong participation from Mechatronics Engineering and International Business students, reflecting its interdisciplinary approach and commitment to applied learning. This achievement underscores UTB’s student-centred mission to equip graduates with creativity, innovation, and future-ready qualifications while contributing to Bahrain’s sustainability goals
