Earlier this week, the community gathered to celebrate the anniversary of a significant moment in the history of UTEP, El Paso and college basketball – the 1966 NCAA men's basketball championship game. @UTEPAthletics invited Miner fans to Memorial Gym for a 20th anniversary screening of the film Glory Road, which follows the Texas Western Miners as they became first-ever team to start five black players and win the national title. Led by legendary coach Don Haskins, the Miners played their way to the championship game against the No. 1-ranked Kentucky Wildcats. Prior to the screening, voice of the Miners Jon Teicher was joined by @UTEPPresident Heather Wilson and special guest Schin Kerr, who portrayed Miner great David Lattin. Audience members included Togo Railey and Louis Baudoin, members of the 1966 team; along with Pam Pippen, a former Texas Western cheerleader who cheered on the Miners that season; Steve Haskins, son of Coach Haskins; and Tina Hill, widow of the late Bobby Joe Hill.

Sixty years ago today, the Texas Western men's basketball team made history when they became first team ever to start five black players and win the NCAA basketball championship game. Led by legendary coach Don Haskins, the Miners played their way to the championship game against the No. 1-ranked Kentucky Wildcats. In honor of this anniversary, UTEP's Mining Minds pickaxe sculpture will be illuminated in orange and blue tonight. ⛏️ The El Paso community is invited to join a 20th anniversary screening of "Glory Road," the 2006 film based on the legendary team, at Memorial Gym on Wednesday, April 1, at 7 p.m. The special guest will be Schin Kerr, who portrayed Miner great David Lattin in the movie.
