I really hope MB offers a real passenger dash one day again. Passenger screens are really off-putting, and the worst bit is the fact that if you don't spec it, you get this awful shiny black plastic trim instead of a regular dash. IMO the worst bit of modern MB interiors

Okay clearly I'm in the minority for takes on this thing. The front looks ugly sure, but the rest of this thing looks great. Interior is a huge downgrade from the concept car though, unfortunately. Most of it's fine, but boring.

@eivissacopter Yeah Autocar often just make their own renders, and the final job isn't always great. Don't focus too much on the visuals, the actual text is what matters. E.g. they recently did one about an electric A class (Merc), but the picture was very clearly a GLA.

Oh I like this! After BMW taking a weird turn in using FWD in this class a 320hp RWD fully electric 1-Series is making my day. I'd buy this over any FWD BEV fun car any day! Still a sucker for the E30 325i of which I've owned several over the year.

I'm going to be honest, I'd lost all hope in this happening for real.

As a lifelong gamer, I spend a lot of time thinking about how to push gaming experiences forward across CPUs, GPUs, software, and games. My team and I have been working hard to evolve @AMD FSR 4 and bring it to more cards. We power over 1 billion gaming devices worldwide. It’s a responsibility we care deeply about. 🎮 This July, RDNA 3 players will experience FSR Upscaling 4.1, delivering sharper visuals and smoother gameplay than ever before. I’m grateful to our fans. Your enthusiasm and ideas inspire us to keep pushing gaming forward. FSR Upscaling 4.1 on RDNA 3 will be ready out of the box for Radeon 7000 Series players in over 300 supported games at launch. And for our RDNA 2 players, we have something exciting coming in early 2027. FSR Upscaling 4.1 will be coming to your cards as well, bringing sharper visuals and smoother gameplay to even more gamers. We cannot wait to show you what is next. Stay tuned 🚀

@SebAaltonen The Audi TT concept's interior (whilst ugly from the outside) combined with BMW's driving display is like optimal imo. Small middle screen for settings etc that can be hidden away. Dedicated climate controls. And a drivers display that stays within your peripheral view

I really like these new driver UIs directly under the window. Minimal eye movement and minimal focus difference. But I really dislike the passenger screens. Son was playing Angry Birds during our GLC test drive and it distracted me a lot. Dream car = Remove these two big screens. Only the strip under the window. Minimal distractions.

@SebAaltonen evkx.net/models/toyota/… 435mi CLTC is worse than I'd have expected honestly for a battery of that size, that's more like ~330mi WLTP. But yes, unfortunately Toyota is dragging their heels on EVs. The only reason they have decent ones in China is they have to.

I have always liked the new Prius looks. Too bad it's a hybrid. This new Toyota bZ7 looks similar to the Prius, but is an EV, with 88.1 kWh battery and good range. Unfortunately only available in China.

@SebAaltonen I guess for a truly seamless trip with more legs you'd want a car capable of 300mi range so that the 10-80% top-up covers the 200mi legs. Again, small country, so I've not really ran into that personally, but yeah that's what I'd be looking for personally.

@SebAaltonen Your mileage may vary and the UK is pretty small overall so my viewpoint might be different to others, but IMO once you get a certain range charging speed becomes more important. Probably about 200-250mi on the motorway or so is the crossover point to me.

The problem is that Chinese EVs sold in the EU have poor range. I found only two models that barely hit 600km. Meanwhile, new EU SUVs: Volvo EX60 = 810km BMW iX3 = 800km Mercedes GLC = 710km These all have big batteries, but so do Chinese SUVs which offer -200km range.
Alvin Foo@alvinfoo

5 years ago, Chinese cars were a joke. Today, BYD outsells Tesla. Let that sink in. BYD. Geely. NIO. XPENG. Zeekr. Not catching up. Taking over. Better tech. Sharper design. Half the price. The takeover isn’t coming. It’s already here.

@SebAaltonen Which does 10-97% charge in 9 minutes. Of course, high voltage architecture (Z9GT is ~920v) makes it easier to hit these speeds - less cooling needed for busbars, contactors, interconnectors etc. But ultimately the big differentiator between Blade 2.0 and iX3 is the cells used.

@SebAaltonen Doesn't matter if it's a 60kWh pack or a 120kWh pack, the cells themselves can theoretically charge fast enough such that they can full charge 10 times in an hour. So a 60kWh pack would be capable of peaking at 600kW, 120kW at 1200kW. We see this in practise with the Denza Z9GT

Large battery takes longer to charge. That's why all of these new premium European EVs have 800V / 400kW systems. It's just 20 minutes from 10%->80%. I agree that you don't need 800km / 500 mile range. 400 miles / 650km is enough (assuming good aero, so that highway speed doesn't drop range as much). Tesla should bring their 800V/400kW system from Cybertruck to 3/Y to match the charging speed of new premium European cars. Regardless what you think about the BMW iX3 or similar cars like Volvo EX60 and Mercedes GLC EQ, these are selling like hot cakes right now. EX60 has already 12 month queue here, and it's not even available for test drive yet. Volvo fans finally can buy a good EV with 800km WLTP / +340km/10min charging. Previous gen electric Volvos were not great. It's insane how bad previous gen Mercedes EQ-series was. The new generation must be the biggest generational jump ever: Mercedes has 2-gear gearbox, front engine disconnect and air suspension to lower the car to improve highway range. 2x more efficient heat pump, new much improved engines. CLA today beats Tesla 3 LR in efficiency. Mercedes used to be among the worst efficiency last gen. Volvo and BMW have gigacasting now to make the battery denser and cut weight, which made it possible for them to ship 800km WLTP cars with bigger batteries. You have to remember that these are premium cars, and premium customers want more. It doesn't have to be the most cost-efficient solution. Now people who want a premium car, can actually buy one that has more range and faster charging. Previous gen EU premium EVs were just flat out worse than Tesla in both aspects. Not anymore. Which is why these cars have 12+ month queues now in the EU. People with money have been waiting for EVs like this to appear in the market.

The BMW iX3 and iX are examples of how little the company still understands about BEVs. A very large battery means that in 99.99% of cases, when long distances aren't being driven, an unnecessary amount of weight is being carried around, which is inefficient and expensive. Since a large battery naturally takes longer to charge, even with fast charging speeds, the supposedly advantageous feature of a long range is worthless, because you simply end up spending more time charging and if you take shorter charging stops you could have been more efficient with a smaller battery. To everyone claiming they want to drive 1,000 km without a break: studies show that people with such a strong bladder are rare. And if your family is coming along, forget it. Such cases are so rare that it makes no sense to develop a vehicle for them. Both vehicles are fundamentally flawed in their design and are only suitable for people who, as ICE owners, have been falsely instilled with fear for years that BEVs supposedly don't have enough range or that there aren't enough charging stations—both of which are lies perpetuated by the oil and gas industry.

@SebAaltonen You still need high quality cells to actually achieve high charging rates, something Tesla has been actively moving away from, and they've been downgrading existing models with worse performing cells. Bad quality cells + 800v architecture gets you the Cybertruck.

@SebAaltonen Yes, and my point is you're saying the reason for it is the 800v architecture, which is only partially true. I'd recommend you read again. 800v battery architecture itself has no implications for how quickly you can charge a cell rated for up to 4.2v. It makes cooling easier.

Looks like mass production/registration/delivery of the Model Y Premium Long Range RWD with Teslas own (less desirable) 8L 74kWh (4680 NMC) pack has started. Yesterday in NL alone we saw 79 registrations of the this new variant! The WLTP comb. range drops to 603km (from 661km)!

@SebAaltonen As you'll notice, the CT's charging curve is one of the worst out there for an 800v vehicle. It starts at a similar peak power as EV6/Ioniq 5, but falls off a cliff quickly. And here's the new Model Y. The only reason for the downgrade over existing model Ys is cell quality.

@SebAaltonen This is the cell used in Cybertruck, and now the UK/EU RWD LR Model Y, which has recently been silently downgraded to lose 10% range and worse charging speeds as a result of the battery change. Take a look at the CT's charging curve. Peaking at a 2C charge rate is horrendous.
