@kara_mitros @poddtadre I think maintaining a kind of mental flexibility is useful. Both and. I’m not saying I prefer her translation. I prefer more ornateness. But I will not block it intellectually for political/zeitgeist purposes.

Very funny that a bunch of Greek statue pfp guys who have almost certainly never read the Odyssey just found out about a well respected translation by a woman academic that was published almost a decade ago and are now suddenly experts on why it's bad.

@kara_mitros @poddtadre Perhaps in high school. Recent syllabus I’ve seen prefer Fagles. I’m sure his vivid imagery will remain appealing. He also uses colloquialisms and modern phrasing, having the hue of the period is probably unavoidable.

@vailingriht @poddtadre I don't think a single American reading "complicated" in Wilson's translation will get this meaning. I want to see it used like this because I have never seen it . I don't believe you can find a single instance of this instance besides Wilson's translation 😆

@vailingriht @poddtadre Some things are simple. Experts and scholars are often wrong . Sometimes they have higher motives. It's ok to think of your own and not get gaslighted by "experts" or "scholars" about the simplest things .

@kara_mitros @poddtadre Complicated can mean involving many different, confusing aspects. Implied in that, if you describe someone that way, is someone who given a problem to solve, does so in a way that includes variety and not predictable. Complicated carries the burden of all of the ideas.

@vailingriht @poddtadre Every English speaking child knows that "complicated" has a completely different meaning than "he who can tackle problems in many ways" . You don't need non English speaking scholars to agree with you if you got a mind of your own for these simple things
