@vailingriht @mattyglesias I am not proud of someone doing a job they were elected to do. That is the bare minimum. You should ask yourself why you didn't know about it to begin with

They are looting the country on an unprecedented scale and the lesson of losses by Massie and Cassidy is that no Republican in Congress will ever lift a finger to halt this.

@BeingJWood He’s actually in the middle. Older democrats actually align with current conservative beliefs. New age democrats are so far left it’s insanity. There’s a shift happening and it started with Obama. The left got crazy and only the smart folks can see it.

Why does Elon Musk push far-right ideology so hard now. He’s not always been like that.

@kara_mitros @poddtadre I think maintaining a kind of mental flexibility is useful. Both and. I’m not saying I prefer her translation. I prefer more ornateness. But I will not block it intellectually for political/zeitgeist purposes.

@vailingriht @poddtadre I think the mental gymnastics you go to excuse Wilson are massive. She could have translated it as "stupid" and you would say that stupid people find weird ways to tackle problems.

Very funny that a bunch of Greek statue pfp guys who have almost certainly never read the Odyssey just found out about a well respected translation by a woman academic that was published almost a decade ago and are now suddenly experts on why it's bad.

@kara_mitros @poddtadre Perhaps in high school. Recent syllabus I’ve seen prefer Fagles. I’m sure his vivid imagery will remain appealing. He also uses colloquialisms and modern phrasing, having the hue of the period is probably unavoidable.

@vailingriht @poddtadre Yeah it's not bad move , but now Wilson's job will be the one massively taught to millions of people through the movie

@kara_mitros @poddtadre What is implied when you describe a machine as complicated? Or someone’s life as complicated? Twists and turns perhaps, in circuitry or event. Do you want a passive Odysseus? Or active.

@vailingriht @poddtadre I don't think a single American reading "complicated" in Wilson's translation will get this meaning. I want to see it used like this because I have never seen it . I don't believe you can find a single instance of this instance besides Wilson's translation 😆

@kara_mitros @poddtadre What is great is that you take two different experts with different motives, different schools, different frameworks and training, and then you get to sit in the middle or go in a new direction

@vailingriht @poddtadre Some things are simple. Experts and scholars are often wrong . Sometimes they have higher motives. It's ok to think of your own and not get gaslighted by "experts" or "scholars" about the simplest things .

@kara_mitros @poddtadre Complicated can mean involving many different, confusing aspects. Implied in that, if you describe someone that way, is someone who given a problem to solve, does so in a way that includes variety and not predictable. Complicated carries the burden of all of the ideas.

@vailingriht @poddtadre Translating complicated words as "complicated" is not a translation. Complicated is never used as "he who can tackle problems in many ways" . Please show me one instance of this, or ask a scholar to show you one .

@kara_mitros @poddtadre X turns everyone into an “expert”. For the Right to be competitive, you must do the training. Which takes real work, not a bias against the liberal arts and posting online. Get into an English PhD.

@vailingriht @poddtadre Yeah well , next time you ask for a professional translation don't get mad if the translator changes the meanings of words in order to keep the same lines and syllables of the authentic . Why spoil the fun?

@kara_mitros @poddtadre I think if you took advanced English courses you would have a different view on this. This kind of your own business sounds like the woke stuff you are against, like you’re special

@vailingriht @poddtadre Every English speaking child knows that "complicated" has a completely different meaning than "he who can tackle problems in many ways" . You don't need non English speaking scholars to agree with you if you got a mind of your own for these simple things

@kara_mitros @poddtadre The same can be said about other translations, especially those from or influenced by the Victorian period. You see, this would be a philosophical idea you would contend with as a post graduate student specializing in translation

@vailingriht @poddtadre It's cool but her work is not a translation it's a personal interpretation , since she changes established things out of taste and her personal style choices and not out of authenticity

@kara_mitros @poddtadre Translation is an art of interpretation; many readers value Wilson's work for its literary qualities rather than literal exactness. By dismissing Emily Wilson’s translation out of bias, you overlook her deliberate artistic and philosophical choices.
