This is my latest filmmaking reel! I specialize in colorful and polished imagery with an emphasis on showcasing diverse voices. There's a key on the bottom left for whether I was the director, cinematographer, or both! If you'd like to work with me: #contact" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">valentinavee.com/#contact

The Sheep Detectives had me crying in the theater. It’s such a heartwarming and funny film! I’m so happy it got theatrical distribution.

So many different textures on the score for PROJECT HAIL MARY - one of them is a variety of bowls of water that are subtly used to double percussion in a number of moments..

I'm 37. Instead of regretting that I can't wake up age 18 again, I pretend to myself that I'm 90 and I've woken up age 37 again, and that I get to magically, wonderfully have the next 50 years again.

If you call Film LA, the very first option is to report a production you think should be shut down for not having a permit. The third option is to try and get a permit. If you don't get your application in my 10am a week before the shoot, they will not process your application. Not 10:05, not 12pm. Must be in by 10am. When you speak to the person at Film LA, they truly sound like they don't even want you to shoot there. I hope whoever our next mayor is shuts down Film LA and makes it free and easy to get a permit. LA has the best crews, the best casts, the best weather. It shouldn't be cheaper and easier to fly to Oklahoma and shoot there than it is to shoot at home. It's time to bring filmmaking back to LA.

Wish Sony would release an FX6 II with in-body XLR ports or an FX3 II with internal NDs. It’s been 6 years since the FX6 was released and 5 years since the FX3. They’re both due for an update. NAB this year, maybe?

@paddingtonpolo @KevinLarat You’ve got a really good point! I like the C80 a lot actually and have shot with it quite a bit. But for personal use, I’d need to invest in a completely new lens system and that’s hard to justify after I’ve sunk so much into E-mount glass.

@KevinLarat C400 is a great camera and I really enjoy the triple base ISO! From factor is quite cute too.

Jonathan Demme on the Filmmaking advice Roger Corman gave him before his directorial debut — "Caged Heat" (1974): "The obligatory first-director's lunch before 'Caged Heat' (1974) was the most extraordinary hour, just amazing. Not because Roger picked up the tab —although it was a free lunch at Cyrano's —but for the way he just machine-gunned the rules of directing at me like: 1) Find legitimate, motivated excuses for moving the camera but always look for ways to move The eyeball, he said, was the organ most utilized in moviegoing. If you don't keep the eyeball entertained, no way you'll get the brain involved. 2) Use as many interesting angles as you can. Don't repeat composition in close-ups. Don't remind the eye it's already seen the same thing. 3) Make your villain as fascinating as your hero. A one-dimensional villain won't be as scary as a complicated, interesting one. It was amazing. When I did 'Something Wild' (1986) years later, I felt I was making a 1980s Corman picture." ("How I Made a Hundred Movies in Hollywood and Never Lost a Dime", Roger Corman, 1990)

This is how I talk on walkie daily: “It’s an 18 mil push-in on 4 foot dana with the one quarter mist, iris pull T16 to T2 and the F22, double-diffed, add LCD, at 6000, skinnied up, through a 4-by of 216 and let’s add the B7C for back ambient” And the team just … understands.

Here’s a video I took while we were shooting. You can see on the upper right Tomas pouring water into a tube that runs between 2 panes of glass in front of the handheld camera Greig operates, giving a smeary, drippy look. Ryan stands in a cage of blinking IR lights which are invisible to the naked eye, but in the monitor it’s beautiful. We used this method for closeups. Medium-wides we did on the spaceship set with fewer lights & a lot of digital augmentation/replacement from ILM, and wides were fully digital from ILM, to match this look.

This is getting reposted to Tau Ceti and back, so: The astrophage collection scene (and the rest of PHM!) is a combined effort of practical in-camera effects and incredible VFX, both created by skilled human artists. Good reference imagery makes the CGI work even better!
