Hij at het aan een tafel op, terwijl hij naar zijn wiskundehuiswerk keek. Hij leek vast te zitten.
Ik was vroeger wiskundeleraar.
Ik liep naar hem toe. “Kwadratische vergelijkingen?”
Hij knikte. “Ik snap het niet.”
Ik ging zitten en hielp hem twintig minuten lang. Toen begreep hij het. Hij vertrok met een glimlach.
De volgende dag kwam hij terug met twee vrienden. Ze kochten koekjes.
De dag daarna kwamen er vijf kinderen.
Blijkbaar had hij op school verteld: “Die dame van de bakkerij helpt met huiswerk.”
Nu is mijn bakkerij de plek waar kinderen na schooltijd samenkomen. Het is er luidruchtig. Het is er rommelig. Er liggen overal rugzakken.
Gisteren vond ik een briefje in de fooienpot. Het was om een briefje van 20 dollar gewikkeld.
“Bedankt dat u mijn zoon hebt geholpen om wiskunde te halen. Een moeder.”
Ik ga de bakkerij niet sluiten.
Ik denk dat ik eindelijk mijn doel heb gevonden.
Het zijn niet de koekjes. Het is de gemeenschap."
