Microsoft is reportedly reducing internal use of Anthropic’s Claude Code after its AI bills started exploding as employee usage rapidly increased.
Some teams are now being pushed toward GitHub Copilot as the company tries to control AI costs.
Uber reportedly faced a similar problem. Executives said the company had already burned through its entire yearly AI tooling budget by April because engineers were heavily using AI coding daily.
AI coding tools are now being used for everything, and that level of usage creates massive compute and token costs when thousands of employees use these systems at the same time.

@priestessofdada As a case study, some years ago there were grep replacements: ag(C), ack (perl!), perhaps some others. Ripgrep came up and now it seems it's the best choice.

@priestessofdada Depends on what you're rewriting of course. If it's C, C++ or Zig then yeah, those are already roughly at the same performance level as Rust.

With news of Flatpak 2 possibly requiring Wayland...
It's worth noting that not only are half of all Linux users *not* using Wayland... but Wayland's marketshare has actually gone *down* over the last two years.
In other words: Anyone making the claim that a hard dependency on Wayland is reasonable because "most Linux users use Wayland"... is not telling the truth.

@dhh Making one's own programming language is of course not necessary to test this out, plenty of existing languages support that.
That's just a thing I've been wanting to do for 2 decades and now magically that's also available to me.

I'm testing an opposite of this idea. Making a practical programming language with roughly the typing level of Typescript/Rust but also with effects typing.
I think static checks benefit LLMs even more than they benefit humans. More problems up front, less problems in production code. And while humans feel pain for the "up front phase", LLMs grind through it like it was nothing. This especially works if you enforce some engineering patterns like "Parse Don't Validate" and "Make Impossible States Unrepresentable". LLMs are really good at doing those, too.
Effects typing implies that some functions are pure, and LLMs are better (I believe) at working with pure functions because they don't have to look beyond those functions at all to understand what they do.
I've been into languages like Haskell, Ocaml and Rust in the past, so that probably colors how I see this problem.

Agents don't need types. They're perfectly capable of pulling off incredible refactorings without. Give them a linter and a test suite, and you have all you need. Token efficiency is where it's at.

I like types. Types align with my brain waves; they help me create better code. TS/Rust are my tools of choice. When using agents, though, that doesn’t matter as much. I asked OpenCode to build me a simple CRM recently using Ruby on Rails. It came back INSANELY GOOD. One prompt, 15 minutes, database migrations, form validations, authentication, a nice backend structure - the works! Ruby and Rails have been around forever. That makes a huge difference for agents. The older and more proven the tech, the better the result you get from the agent. That is also why Linux has suddenly become such a joy to use.
