For every retweet of this post, I will donate £1 to the @VC_and_GC_Assoc up to £50,000. Time is running out following @I_W_M’s decision to close the Lord Ashcroft Gallery. Visit while you still can, to honour the bravery of those who risked so much to protect our great nation.

@ClarkeMicah @iknowaletheia All the public libraries in my area are free. Some staffed by unpaid volunteers. It’s about the only thing decent left in this country

.@iknowaletheia . Apart from my usual advice to use libraries if you are genuinely unable to afford the fee, I'd add that there would be no independent media if people were not prepared to pay (the rather small) charges to read it.

@ClarkeMicah @DailyMail Shame this article was pay-walled. Such critical constitutional issues should not be.

@davidyelland You live an absolute privileged lifestyle. Vast swathes of this country due to uncontrolled immigration are awful. You might pause to think of your fellow countrymen having to suffer this outcome. Instead you trot at the usual racist jibes

Brexit unleashed and enabled open racism, Luddism and hatred across huge swathes of the country and the established media enabled this and/or did not lead their readers away from it, which in my view and experience is the role of mass market editors. This will always be my view. I said so at the time, I even tried to write a warning column about it in my old paper, but they would not take the piece.

What is at stake now in Ukraine is not territory it will have to give up in a peace deal. The amount is still in dispute but not the principle. The real stake is the status of the 80% of Ukraine that will remain, for now, unoccupied by Russia. Will there be partition with protection — i.e. the 80% has powerful, well-equipped armed forces of its own and security guarantees from Europe, NATO, US. Or partition with subordination — i.e. Ukraine military reduced to a rump with no effective security guarantees. In which case over time Ukraine would become a Russian satellite state and vulnerable to a 3rd invasion whenever the Kremlin felt like it. But partition with protection = a democratic rump Ukraine free of Russian control/influence to become prosperous and part of the European economic system. Putin cannot countenance that. It flies in the face of his historic mission to recreate imperial Russia.
