Night thoughts on “polytropos,” 1: The syntax of the Greek suggests that the relative clause (“who greatly wandered…”) that follows this adjective is intended as a gloss on it. Hence the translation of p should be a word(s) that describes his route as well as his personality.

As one who studies autocratic regimes in the past, I am horrified to see the reemergence of gift-giving as part of politics. Equally horrifying is the reemergence of predation, rent-seeking and what the ancients called "crown money", collective gifts to the autocrat.

I am sad and disappointed to see classics eliminated at my beloved alma mater. I was a classics minor in Latin, and classics was a wonderful home for me. Studying classic texts in Latin set me down a path I'm still traveling. Everywhere I turn in higher ed it's so bleak.
