아즈텍 신화 속 꽃과 미의 신 쇼치케찰 디자인 러프… 아즈텍 신화도 재밌네요

As a Mesoamerican history nerd, here's my media, artist, youtube etc suggestions! COMICS & FILM: - Onyx Equinox (pic 1): action-adventure, light horror-thriller fantasy adult animated series. - Codex Black by @Itzcacalotl (pic 2): B/W Webcomic, now full color print/digital comic! fantasy action-adventure comic - Aztec Empire by @AztecEmpire1520 (pic 3): Historical webcomic about the Cortes expedition and fall of the Aztec - Zotz by @Zotzcomic (pic 4): alt history comic, see also their upcoming Dream Rider sci-fi series. Other media I haven't checked out yet I have in the "conditional recs" sections, but given Zotz's insane pedigree with Mesoamerican art (and the pages i've seen), I am making an exception! - Necahual: Magical girl webcomic by @2Heroes1. Haven't had time to fully read it yet, but I like what I've read so far! - Flowers & Ink by @taimanzano : Sci-fi/fantasy comic, really cool modernist/futuristic Aztec and Teotihuacano architecture! Conditional recs: - Road to El Dorado: Fantasy adventure-comedy animated movie. Takes more liberties and doesn't have the same level of intimate knowledge of motifs/symbolism as the above recs, but honestly not as off as you'd think! Gorgeous, too. - Poyoman by @Gonzzink: Upcoming fantasy graphic novel. I missed the chance to check out the prototype, but his Nawalli cardgame is super cool (check that out too!) so I have good expectations. - Maya and the Three: Fantasy action-adventure animated series, still need to watch it, but seems promising! - Aztec Batman: Upcoming animated movie, we don't even have trailers yet, but the art and bios/blurbs we have seem pretty promising! - Victor & Valentino: Kids Comedy(?) cartoon. I know very little about this show, but @kikafedcue has posted screenshots of some REALLY cool modernist takes on Aztec architecture: x.com/kikafedcue/sta…, and the ones where they go back in time(?) also seem really good: x.com/kikafedcue/sta… - Macoatl by @Checomal: Haven't had the chance to check it out yet, so I can't fully comment, but needed to include it. - Black Panther Wakanda Forever: I have pretty mixed feelings overall, but the outfits, set, and props are all amazing in the scene where Namor talks to Shuri in his painted room: x.com/majora__z/stat… - Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers: Action/mystery anime. Haven't seen it, and as far as I know the Mesoamerican theming is only a big deal in the first few episodes, but the architecture, murals, etc seems decent from what I researched, less so the clothing. Apparently it's a good show too! - Hijos del Viento/Söhne des Windes: The narrative, costumes, etc are not great, but the set design and architecture is pretty decent! - Hernan (Amazon): The story really doesn't handle the history right from what I can tell, and the on the ground sets, architecture, etc are gross and intentionally poorly made looking, but the overhead aerial shots of Tenochtitlan are cool and make good gifs. ---- There's a LOT of other comics, some actually pretty well researched, especially in Spanish, French, etc, but I have a much harder time keeping track of these. I know i'm forgetting some english ones too, sorry if so! ===================== VIDEO GAMES: - @aztezgame : Crazy 2d character action/beat em up game with light strategy elements. Bayonetta, DMC etc level combat depth, very stylistic/abstract, but fairly well researched take on Aztec theming specifically. - Tlatoani: upcoming Isometric Aztec city-builder game by @PerspectiveGam6 . I've helped out with this a bit and played some beta builds! - Sixth Sun: upcoming 2d platformer soulslike(?) game by @saveslothstudio , styled after the art and iconography in Mesoamerican books/codices! Gonna make an exception here like for Zotz even tho I haven't checked it out yet, just the screenshots are REALLY promising. Conditional recs: - Mesoamerica Universalis: Overhaul for Europa Universalis 4 to focus and fix how it handles Mesoamerica. Sadly, is no longer being worked on, but what was there was great/can still be used. - The Medieval 2 Total War mod "Rise of the Quetzal" and the Age of Mythology "The Return of the Gods" mods both seem decent but I need to look into them more. - Flower Wars(?) by @flowerwars1438 : A robolox game! I don't know much about Roblox, but all the stuff I've seen looks really well done. - @DreamDarknessVG, upcoming horror/adventure(?) game. Haven't been able to keep up with it as much as I should so I can't fully vouch for it, but I know the devs have taken doing research seriously! - Digimon: Tlalocmon is a pretty well researched take on Tlaloc: x.com/majora__z/stat… ; but that's really the only particularly well done Mesoamerican thing. - The End is Nahual: Game by @Thirdworld_Prod , haven't had time to play it yet, but seems promising! - Mortal Kombat X/11: Kotal Kahn is visually stereotypical, but a thematically decent take on Huitzilopochtli... don't think I have a breakdown to link? - Street Fighter V: Necalli's normal outfit is pretty sterotypical/lame, but his story mode form is sorta neat: x.com/majora__z/stat… - Fate (Night/Stay or Lostbelt?): I am pretty meh on Tlaloc/Tenochtitlan and Kukulkan, Tezcatlipoca sucks, and their Quetzalcoatl design WOULD be solid if it were for Toci or Xochiquetzal instead. Ironically, though, the generic Ocelomeh enemies have pretty good symbolism despite being the least Mesoamerican looking: x.com/majora__z/stat… - Expedition Conquistadors: The Mesoamerican visual and historical elements can be ehhh, but the game itself is a really cool choose your own adventure narrative, grid based tactical RPG. - Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death: Not even close to being authentic, but it's a wierdly well made God of War clone you can buy for like 99 cents most of the time on Steam, so go for it. - Pawarumi: Haven't really checked it out yet, but seems like a cool (albeit not particularly authentic) sci fi 2d shoot em up. - Pokemon Sage: a REALLY high quality Pokemon fangame set in a Latin American inspired region. The mesoamerican elements are mostly eh, but an amazing game in almost all other aspects. ===================== WRITTEN FICTION: Not my area, but I mostly trust this person's judgement, though I don't know how much she values authenticity compared to me: reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comm… Gary Jenning's "Aztec" I have also heard good things about, aside from it playing up sexual stuff a lot. Academic, educational, etc book recs are for another list some other time. ===================== ARTISTS: Everybody in the twitter list and who I mention here: x.com/majora__z/stat… ! If you see this and you're not on here, I apologize, I had a bunch of people to add I lost track of, plus I plan to make a secondary list for people who take a lot of artistic liberties/more purely fantasy Some notable non-twitter artists are Scott/Stuart Gentling, H. Tom Hall, Angus Mcbride, Keith Henderson, Peter Dennis, Tomas Filsinger, Trasancos 3D, Adam Hook, Louis Glanzman, Christopher Klein, Ned Seidler, Christian Jégou, Iker Larrauri Prado, and Jean Torton/Voyages D'alix, to name a few (there's a LOT more!) Conditional non-twitter recs: Pierre Joubert (mixes cultures sometimes, depicts buildings without paint), Jose Ignacio Redondo (same as Joubert), H. M. Herget (same as Joubert + outdated elements), Greg Harlin (depicts buildings without paint), etc. To be honest some of the former list have some of these too (Angus doesn't show paint, Torton and Henderson have outdated elements, etc), but it's a bigger issue with these ===================== YOUTUBE AND ONLINE VIDEO: - Nahualli: Fantasy Youtube animation youtube.com/watch?v=uMc2Bz… ; almost fairy-tale esque whimsical sequence? - Xitlacua Cualli: Historical Youtube animation: youtube.com/watch?v=IFnJpX… , see also making of: youtube.com/watch?v=XepIfT…. Takes some liberties but is pretty good - "El Itinerario de Hernán Cortés" exhibit video: Animation made by Sopa de Sobre for that exhibit: vimeo.com/172879790 and vimeo.com/132312880 ; very well done/accurate aside from Moctezuma II incorrectly having the quetzal headdress, and some of the Conquistador armor - Ancient Americas: Educational Youtube channel @AncientAmericas" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">youtube.com/@AncientAmeric…
(I help out with his videos frequently! The Teotihuacan and Chocolate videos for example) - AztlanHistorian: Educational Youtube channel: @AztlanHistorian" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">youtube.com/@AztlanHistori… - @Mnlaser 's "Aztec Human Sacrifices" video. Really well researched breakdown on the theology and practices behind sacrifice. This youtube.com/watch?v=or6W4s… brings you to my comment with clarifications and corrections. - @Historysmilo's "TLAXCALLAN - An Indigenous American Republic" video. Great overview on Tlaxcala, this youtube.com/watch?v=FVgNul… links to my comment with some clarifications (something I forgot to mention also was some other sites like Yautepec and Cuexcomate also had commoners with some access to elite goods) - @ InvictaHistory's Aztec videos: Mostly pretty well researched videos on both military ranks (I did this one!), the life of kids in Aztec society, the Siege of Tenochtitlan, and the city itself. Keep your eyes peeled for more videos I'll help write here... - @KingsGenerals 's Aztec and Maya videos which @CogitoEdu helped with. Mostly pretty well researched introductory overviews! not extremely in depth, but are solid overviews! A few of them have comments from me with clarification and corrections. - @CartoonUniverse's "The Lore and Mythology Of Onyx Equinox EXPLAINED!" video. I helped write this! youtube.com/watch?v=1Y2R3l… - DJPeachCobbler's Aztec video trilogy. Really in depth videos on the Cortes expedition and the Fall of the Aztec (the best videos on such on Youtube). I helped with these! Video 1 and 3 have pinned comments from me with clarifications & corrections (I delve much more into the political dynamics/motives of different Mesoamerican kings/states), but my comment on the part 2 video isn't pinned, this youtube.com/watch?v=2R4U3f… link should bring that comment on part 2 to the top. (Warning: Cobbler has an edgy style of comedy) - ReligionForBreakfast's Aztec and Maya videos: Pretty good look at Aztec and Maya religion, tho the former I think is a bit too sacrifice centric. I have a comment with clarifications/corrections on the former here: youtube.com/watch?v=vdO-QB… Conditional recs: - @ExtraCreditz 's two "Aztec Myths - Extra Mythology" videos. Both are REALLY good in terms of the videos's art for costumes/ornamentation and visual symbolism (tho the cities/architecture are off for the Founding of Mexico vid, and I think a more in depth explanation of the symbolism of the myth would have been warranted.). The "The Fifth Sun" video is solid, but is s synthesis of a few different versions of the myths involved. The notion of Quetzalcoatl, Tezcatlipoca, Huitzilopochtli, and Xipe Totec being a quartet born from Ometeotl is also a misreading of the original codices, see: x.com/clickypenned/s… ; and Ometeotl as a creator god of duality also probably didn't actuallyt exist in Prehispanic religion. - Most of NativLang's videos on Nahuatl, Maya languages, Mesoamerican writing, etc are good, aside from Aztec kings wearing the Quetzal headdress. But the "How Interpreters Helped Topple the Aztec Empire" video suffers from quite a few common errors, such as overemphasizing Tlaxcala, and taking some of Cortes's account at too much face value. See the links in the tweet I refer to below re: Epimetheus, + watch the cobbler videos/read my comments on those. - @RealEpimetheus 's overview of Mesoamerican history (youtube.com/watch?v=GY4tnS…) is okay, but has more issues then the other vids (which tbf, many do overstate sacrifices or occasionally use inaccurate images). It presenting the Zapotec as totally unified isn't quite true; many drawn figures have ceremonial attire when presented as soldiers; bringing up the Toltecs (who may be mostly mythical, but certainly did not conquer all of Central Mexico, much less the Mayas) then the Classic Maya is out of order; the pop figures for Teotihuacan and Calakmul are a bit too high, the fall of Mayapan didn't lead to the fall of all Maya cities, and it overemphasizes Tlaxcala as the only major ally of Cortes (see the links here: x.com/majora__z/stat…) ----- Note: I'm not including channels with academic lectures and presentations by archeologists here, I don't have a big list off the top of he head assembled yet. I think that + academic books, papers, etc is also sort of it's own separate list.
