The greatest myth about Leon Trotsky is that he was a great military commander. He was not. First of all, Trotsky almost never saw actual combat during the Russian Civil War, except perhaps once or twice in largely symbolic circumstances. He had no formal military training. He became famous for his armored train, which carried him from one crisis point to another across the fronts. There, he would rally troops, deliver speeches, reorganize commands, hand out rewards, and order the execution of deserters and incompetent officers. That was the extent of his " combat " role: command presence, political leadership, and morale-building under fire, not frontline fighting itself. The one episode usually cited as Trotsky personally experiencing combat was the defense of Saint Petersburg against General Yudenich’s advance in October 1919. By most accounts, Trotsky rallied retreating Red Army troops on the outskirts of the city, reportedly mounting a horse to turn fleeing soldiers around and lead a counterattack. He came under enemy fire during the defense and received the Order of the Red Banner for his actions. That is the closest thing to genuine personal combat exposure in his record. The image of Trotsky as a warrior was largely a product of propaganda and theatrical command presence, much of it carefully cultivated by Trotsky himself.
