@GuillermoRein @NobelPrize There have been some incredible Nobel prizes in physics for engineering in recent history. Shuji Nakamura (blue LED) and Donna Strickland at UW (chirped pulse amplification) are both engineers, and their work has literally impacted millions of people.

Engineers are rarely awarded the Nobel Prize, despite Alfred Nobel’s clear directive in his will: it should recognise those who conferred the greatest benefit on humankind through discovery, invention, or improvement. Engineering and its inventions drive progress and improve all aspects of our lives - shouldn’t they be more celebrated?

Testing our high-speed #schlieren set-up intended for forthcoming Li-ion battery thermal runaway experiments on the Sydney Buoyant Fire Burner. Images did not disappoint! Interesting observations of buoyant instabilities at the laminar flame neck and downstream turbulent region.

@WojciechITB @DrMichaelKinsey @GuillermoRein @GeorgeBoustras I think it's fine provided you can explain/infer/hypothesise what physics or details are being missed or require better measurements. Would be nice to see more of it, particularly in modelling work.

@DrMichaelKinsey Actually, when was the last time you reviewed a paper that was based on negative result? I, for 120+ reviewed, don’t seem to remember one. What eyes of the editor see? @GuillermoRein @GeorgeBoustras

When was the last time you read a paper which showed an evacuation model didn’t produce comparable results to real world? Are the vast majority of model validation studies bias to showing a positive result and giving credibility to one’s own research tools? #AskingForAFriend

Transitioning to burning hydrogen to decarbonise energy is probably going to happen in (at least) some circumstances, but we are going to need quite a lot of fire science research to deploy better fire safety measures than the @NASA Broom Method... shop.minimuseum.com/blogs/cool-thi…

@GuillermoRein Interesting that they believe that there is a pool of reviewers to access this pilot scheme. Their incessant harassment is deeply offputting, so it is a wonder that people would willingly subject themselves to their process. This entire affair is somewhat disturbing.

I am increasingly concern with MDPI. Lastest is their Reviewer Article Selector where “reviewers can select manuscripts that spark their interest”. This is a breach of editorial roles, waters down peer review, and creates a conflict of interest. This is not acceptable.

@WojciechITB @HEMitchell42 @ImperialHazelab @MattBonnerFire Good ideas. I have printed PLA boxes to house ESCs and processors before for a 17000 RPM drone rotor which get quite hot. You could print a cut-out with some threaded inserts to mount a simple 5V or 12V DC fan for convective cooling. Solved all our overheating issues.

@vguptafire @HEMitchell42 @ImperialHazelab @MattBonnerFire The first prototype from PLA, just fiddling with air curtain design, but the final ones will be ABS and we are thinking about coating them in IR reflecting 3M foil too. Watercooled and metal printed would allow going pretty hardcore with exposures!

We have been working 3D metal printed (stainless steel) watercooled porous burners which has yielded great results so far. Now that I think about it, it wouldn't be hard to extend that concept for cameras!
