NY legend Chamique Holdsclaw came to my block on Baldwin Road in the mid 90s. She was the #1 girl's high school basketball player in the country at the time. 1st Pick was her nickname in her hood, Astoria projects in Queens.
Julius Erving AKA Dr. J was raised on Parkside in my town of Hempstead. He started his legendary journey playing for the Salvation Army biddy basketball team under Coach Don Ryan in the early 1960s. He then moved two towns over to Roosevelt at age 13.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. came to the Park Lake projects in my town of Hempstead on May 12, 1965. The block used to named Wilcow Street but after he spoke to the residents, it was renamed Martin Luther King Drive.
