Holidays were always tough for me as a 1st time Founder. The whole world slowed down, but I just needed to keep going and keep working. I didn't want to keep going... but I just didn't know any other way. There was always that one big priority that I needed to keep moving forward on and the long weekend was one big huge inconvenience. 4th of July BBQ? I was thinking about the VP hire. Thanksgiving? I was thinking about the quarter. Holidays? I was thinking about the fundraise. Part of this is the life of an early-stage Founder. You're always thinking about the business. But part of this was the frame of the beginner. Everything felt urgent and important and I couldn't look past the next crisis and that made holidays hurt. As a Founder of an early-stage company again and with the frame of the veteran under my belt, here are three principles that I've found helpful for getting through long weekend and holidays as a Founder: 📆 1/ Get Proactive About Slowdowns: One of the things that hurt me the most was that long weekends would sneak up on me. "What?! It's a 3-day weekend?! But we need to..." -- So I started to map out the year on a macro spreadsheet and always looking a few weeks ahead. This helped me always see slow downs coming and plan accordingly. Even today, my EA and I have a 2023 spreadsheet that gives us a birds eye view of the month and helps us plan the flow of the next 8 weeks. It's epic. 🙏 2/ Use the time to give yourself some grace: What makes us great as Founders is that we're action oriented and we're focused on the 'next thing.' But when the Earth decides to spin a little bit slower and we want to keep forging ahead it is painful. Instead of fighting it, take some time to give yourself some grace. Now that I can see a long weekend coming a mile away, I go into long weekends and holidays prepared for the slower pace and MOST importantly, I go into it with the mindset of giving myself some grace to rest, slow, and just acknowledge how far we've come. Giving yourself some grace is super important. No one else can do this for you (not even your Board Members), you'll have to do it for yourself. It's going to be slow anyway, so why not use this time to do it? I promise, it won't seed complacency. 👁️ 3/ Visualize the movie ahead: Slow periods are aways a great time to visualize the movie ahead. Grab a notebook, go to your favorite cafe, and sit and ask yourself and answer this question: "What're the BIG opportunities I'm working to capitalize on right now?" -- I like to follow that up with "What does the next version of ME look like so that I can unlock this new level of growth for myself as a Founder and for my company?" -- this allows you to really go back into the office with a clear vision of what the path forward is. Do these three things... and you'll make the most of your holiday weekends. And you'll go back feeling rejuvenated. And that VP hire? Don't worry -- those things always have a way of working out beautifully.
