After And The Breadwinner Is..., I knew the next one would be harder. When people showed up again for Call Me Mother, it felt like real validation. At the end of the day, you can argue with critics, but you can’t argue with where people choose to spend their time and money.
Going to the cinema now is a serious economic decision. For many families, it means sitting down and figuring out which one MMFF movie everyone agrees to watch. The fact that families had that conversation and chose this film is something I don’t take lightly.
There’s a lot of talk about making movies more affordable, and I hope that happens. But in the meantime, our job as filmmakers is not just to make movies, but to give people a reason to believe in us again. We have to make films that are worth the trip to the mall. It won’t change overnight. But if we keep making movies that respect the audience, I trust the support will follow.
When the Filipino audience shows up, the least we can do is keep making films that are worth choosing.
