I have quite a few original copies of ‘The History of The Suffolk Regiment, 1914-1927’ by Lt. Col. C.C.R.Murphy. A few mint copies, a copy of the cheap version with card covers, some with dust jackets and nearly all with interesting ownership inscriptions. What I certainly didn’t need was another one. Here it is. This popped up on eBay just over two weeks ago and it’s in pretty rough condition. However, it had a nice ownership inscription of Captain Julian L.H. Smith, who served with the Suffolks from 1908 to 1926 so I bid £25 and forgot all about it… 1/

“In the noise of the firing we could distinguish the unmistakable music of our Vickers guns" - reassurance and, for some, no transient affinity. Check out my latest Substack article for a look at the Vickers as a source of personal and regimental pride. combinedobservations.substack.com/p/from-mogaung…

Very much looking forward to speaking at the @codyfirearms Arsenals of History symposium this August. I'll be discussing the older weaponry used in the current Russia-Ukraine War. The Symposium's lineup is incredible, with some fascinating topics from esteemed speakers.

How many different types of #VickersMG ammunition box are there? Well we’re pretty sure we have most of them. For the last couple of days, a couple of our volunteers have been busy cleaning and cataloguing the belt boxes we have in the collection.

Can you see it? Given that we’re regularly printing and editing materials and publications, spotting a spelling mistake on something in the artefact collection is reassuring. Granted, they had more important things to focus on. This is a printed graticule card for indirect fire.

Pointer, Staff, Mark 1. Used to help indicate a target to someone looking over your shoulder. Part of a machine gunner’s kit on the Second World War but a general piece for instructors ever since it seems.

Grayburn will probably be won by the company that makes the best business case to do the most within the MoD's small arms inventory: manufacture, maintenance, support for as much of the fleet as possible. Cost and utility will be strong factors but it's gonna be 5.56 and an AR.

@vickersmg Superb. We have an AB64 issued to a 2/Suffolk fella captured at Le Cateau but all he recorded was potential French girlfriends!

A quick reminder that our April #HuttedHistories talk is this coming Wednesday, 22nd April, at 7.30pm. It’s my turn to be the speaker so I will be talking about… ‘A Very Different War - Suffolk Soldiers in the Far East’ It is now over 80 years since VJ Day and the Second World War will soon have slipped from living memory. Many of the campaigns and battles of 1939-45 are firmly etched into the national conscious, but the story of the war in the Far East, and in particular the disastrous campaign in Malaya, are not so well known. The suffering of those who were captured at Singapore in February 1942, and the cruelty endured by them in captivity, should be much more widely known. Many servicemen, servicewomen and civilians were captured after the Fall of Singapore, but East Anglia suffered disproportionately so it is appropriate that the story is told through a Suffolk perspective. With anecdotes and artefacts from many of the Far East Prisoners of War that he knew, Taff tells their stories and reminds us why we must not forget. Many local people will have relatives who served with the 4th or 5th Suffolks, 1st or 2nd Cambridgeshires or the other units of the 18th Division. Do come along and share your stories. @Taff_Gillingham Hope all goes well. We have a few FEPOW paperwork sets in the archive. This one is remarkable in that it’s a 9 RNF chap that managed to keep his AB64 Pt 2 throughout his capture. It includes his last pay entry on 6 February and then he uses it to record his medical history.
