"The Sinhalese voted for AKD, the Muslims voted for Sajith, and the Tamils voted for Ariyanethran." This was the "Election Summary" from a friend of mine. But in truth, voting patterns are far more nuanced because people are far more complex. There are no such things as a "Sinhalese voter" or a "Muslim voter" or a "Tamil voter". Unless, of course, your goal is purely to highlight this single difference between these groups, at the expense of all similarities and other differences. If you're looking for a clearer, data-driven view of how Sri Lankans of different ethnicities voted in #PresPollSL2024, check out the dashboard at nuuuwan.github.io/prespoll. P.S. If you're being paid to spread oversimplified narratives like my friend’s, you have my sympathies. The world could certainly use more problem solvers than problem makers.
