Trump threatened to halt arms deliveries to Ukraine—not aid, but specifically goods paid for under the PURL program — unless Europe joined the coalition to open the Strait of Hormuz. The FT explicitly reported this in its article “Trump threatened to stop weapons for Ukraine unless Europe joined Hormuz coalition.” Three officials familiar with the events confirmed: Trump responded to the Europeans’ refusal with a threat to halt supplies via PURL. That is why Rutte urgently convened France, Germany, and Britain and forced them to sign a joint statement on March 19 regarding their “readiness to help ensure safe passage through the strait.” One of the officials stated bluntly: “It was Rutte who insisted on the joint statement because Trump had threatened to withdraw from Purl and from Ukraine in general.” During a call with France, Germany, and the UK, Rutte explained that Trump had been “rather hysterical” over the Europeans’ refusal to defend the strait. Rubio stated that shipments via the PURL have not yet been halted. “Nothing yet has been diverted.” But at the same time, he did not rule out that in the future, weapons intended for Ukraine could be redirected to replenish American stockpiles. “If we need something for America and it’s American, we’re going to keep it for America first,” he said. In other words, the U.S. is blackmailing Europe with Ukraine — and openly admits it.
