#ArjunChakravarthy is a deeply passionate project that took several years to materialize, primarily due to the repeated physical transformations - 7 to 8 times - undertaken by the lead actor Vijay Ramaraju. It chronicles the real-life journey of a celebrated Telugu Kabaddi player from the 1970s and ’80s, capturing his rise, fall, and resurgence. The standout elements for me were the Kabaddi sequences. The pre-interval match and the climactic match & Himalayan training segment are executed with great energy and intensity. Vijay Ramaraju’s transformation is remarkable - his dedication is visible in every frame, and his raw, almost animalistic body language adds authenticity to the character. On the flip side, the romantic track - which serves as a turning point in the protagonist’s downfall - lacks emotional impact and doesn’t quite connect. The film’s research is commendable, especially in highlighting the neglect and mistreatment faced by national-level athletes during that era. It’s heartbreaking. Performances by Dayanand Reddy and Ajay stand out. Their well-written roles are brought to life with impressive conviction. Kudos to the producer and director for committing to a story that demanded immense time, patience, budget and endurance. While Arjun Chakravarthy doesn’t entirely cross the finish line, the sincerity, effort, and ambition behind it certainly earn a standing ovation 👏
