This week, Dominican authorities reported finding the bodies of at least four women near the Dominican-Haitian border. All four had been deported by the U.S. government from Puerto Rico to Haiti. Haiti continues to be plagued by unprecedented gang violence following the assassination of its president and the collapse of its government. Women and girls there face a growing risk of gender-based violence, with many living in displacement camps. This has been happening to women in Haiti for years, the victim in this photo Anise Boisrond was decapitated and dismembered in November 2020 at the beginning of the most recent destabilization. The Dominican government has refused to accept Haitian refugees, stating that the United Nations and the international community have failed to help cover the cost of their care. Similarly, the United States has stopped accepting Haitian refugees and has attempted to deport those living here legally.
