@pherenheit @invisigaltwt Maybe the comprehension isn't the problem; it's the source material itself. Who said I didn't live in the US previously?

@violentgeometry @invisigaltwt And you say my reading comprehension is dumb😂😂😂 where did I ask about Brazil?? I was clearly referring to the US when I said why are you so worried about a country you have never lived in. But yeah, keep studying English buddy

a white latino is not a person of color idk how else to say this

@pherenheit @invisigaltwt Because I was born there and lived there for 23 years of my life? Again, with a PhD, you're making an even worse case for the quality of education in the USA.

@violentgeometry @invisigaltwt I’m American graduated with a PHD in Public Health from UCI in MY own country, and I’m also here giving you a fraction of my time wondering why you’re so worried about a country you have no lived in experience to talk about.😂😂😂

@pherenheit @invisigaltwt I'm sorry, did you get upset? I'm a Brazilian, I got a doctorate in engineering in Japan, and I'm currently giving you a fraction of my time to speak to you in the 4th language I know. At least, you know, be a little creative.

@invisigaltwt the original poster is talking to white Latinos IN THE USA. Just because you’re on an American app being exposed to American people & conversations and tweets doesn’t mean it’s about u, for u, or to u. Stay in your lane and there won’t be any confusion or misunderstandings

@queeniechanhere It's still an interesting solution for niche fandoms, I believe.

I have done something like this during COVID. A purely online con. Most people just went right back to regular cons after COVID restrictions were lifted. It seems the con-going audience prefers physically going to cons and will only go online if it’s impossible. In Australia, shipping anything is insanely expensive. It starts at AUD$11 for anything bigger than a letter (1200 yen).

The prohibitive cost of tabling at any con in the west is the #1 reason why doujinshi culture dies on the vine. It’s the reason why people HAVE to make fan merch, because otherwise you can’t make those hundreds of dollars back. One way around this is to organise smaller zine fairs and library fairs. When pitched as community events at a local hub (schools too), it can be sponsored by local business and government. Tables become much cheaper, and you can mandate a ‘comics as majority of what you sell’ policy to ensure that it’s a doujinshi event. The real challenge of these events are always marketing though. There’s no ‘set it up and they will come’ situation here—these events have to be properly marketed, which is why libraries are the best place to host them (if your pitch to them is ‘comics improve literacy and help reluctant readers’.)
Élodie Dow | エロデイ・ダウ@Elodie_Dow

Table costs in the west are too expensive to maintain a doujin culture currently. I think this is the biggest problem. Along with upfront production costs. Doujin includes independent work as well as fanworks. We had Doujincon last year in the UK, it was small but a good start.

@queeniechanhere I’ve done a few cons in Japan that were very niche and fully online (and very successful!). There’s a platform where you can set up little cons and people play it like an RPG game, and ofc you can buy the things to be shipped to you irl. Is this not an option in the west?

The fundamental question is: can you allow yourself to do it for fun or as a hobby?

Of course everything in Japan is cheaper, just compare national salaries. To me, the main difference is just the culture around the events. Japan runs everything not for profit, while the US does for profit+
beet 🫜 ACEN G05@beet

i’ve been seeing a lot of chatter about 🇯🇵 vs 🇺🇸 artist alleys.. imo a key factor in why they’re so different is rooted in how the USA lacks the public transit infrastructure + population density that japan has the cost to BE at a show is the most expensive part of vending

The regular booth at a Japanese event has a handful of products, sometimes just 2 or 3 doujin. Because the table fee is low, so people can do it just for fun. Meanwhile in the US the table fee is high and that leads to the need for profit. To change this, one side needs to budge.
