I've come such a long way with my soldering. Mod-chipping an OLED Switch is not for the faint of heart, it is by far the hardest procedure I have ever performed in my career as a soldering technician.
Picture 1 showcases the size of the components I'm working with here using the head of a Q-tip for reference, in the photo there are two capacitors, each needing to be soldered on both sides.
Picture 2 showcases what is called the Kamikaze method. Why is it called that? It's because if you mess it up, your entire console is toast. This is an alternative, more reliable, and way more risky method to tap into Dat0 (this is located on the front of the board), it connects directly to the EMMC chip located on the back of the main board.
Picture 3 showcases the other flex I had to solder to the board, you can see point C, that is Dat0 that I tapped into using the Kamikaze method. This part is a breeze aside from point D, which requires scraping a via in order to access it. The via in question is roughly the same diameter as the graphite in a mechanical pencil.
Picture 4 mainly is meant to showcase B2, which is another via that is roughly the same diameter as the graphite in a mechanical pencil. This is the access point for that line on the front of the board.
List of tools I used:
- Pinecil w/ a chisel tip set to 360°C
- HAKKO FX-600D w/ a fat chisel tip set to 360°C (for shield desoldering)
- some generic iron holder
- Brass tip cleaner
- MG Chemicals 8341 No Clean Flux
- MG Chemicals 60Sn/40Pb thin gauge solder
- iFixit angled forceps
- UV solder mask & USB-C rechargeable UV Flashlight
- 0.1mm enameled magnet wire
- Northridge Fix Grinding Pen V2
- homemade tri-wing screwdriver
- iFixit bit-driver w/ PH000 bit
- HAKKO flush cutters
- KNOKOO fume extractor w/ foot pedal activation
- 99% isopropyl alcohol in an acetone dispenser bottle
- Q-tips (I find these leave less lent behind vs off-brand cotton swabs)
- Arctic Silver thermal paste
- fine and dense bristle toothbrush (to clean old thermal paste out of the nooks and crannies on the CPU)
- Weller jumbo silicone mat
- articulating LED lighting
No microscope, no magnifying glass.
