The idea that the British Empire was “the largest in history” is misleading. In terms of percentage of world population, it doesn’t even make the top 10 (see table from @WalterScheidel). In terms of absolute population, the Qing Empire in 1912 was larger.

At its height, the British Empire was the largest in history and, for over a century, was the foremost global power. By 1913 the British Empire held sway over 412M people, 23% of the world pop. at the time, and by 1920 it covered 35M km2, 24%of the Earth's total land area 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
