Most of the conversations between De Niro and Pesci in Casino were improvised. Scorsese would tell them where to start and where to end. The rest was up to them. For this desert scene, cinematographer Robert Richardson shot with two cameras simultaneously just to capture whatever they threw at each other. He lit Pesci with harsh frontal light and De Niro with backlight, creating a visual contrast that mirrors who's attacking and who's absorbing. Two old friends tearing each other apart in the middle of nowhere, and you can feel every word landing.
