@vlfilkov @Nature ..I wouldn't dismiss it...there might be something useful here, but it's hard to know what exactly it means without a gender breakdown, especially when the field is so male-dominated. But I'm happy to agree to disagree 🙏

I just heard about this '22 study. But! Oddly, the results are not broken down by Gender---majority of STEM academics are male. My (anecdotal) Prior is that women are more often the victims of drunken harassment at academic meetings. Thoughts? @Nature nature.com/articles/d4158…

@devanbu @Nature If you want to dismiss a good study, and another good study and instead prefer your anecdotally informed prior that’s up to you of course. I’ll chose as much empirical evidence as available to inform me. Thanks for the conversation, always a pleasure.

@vlfilkov @Nature This is a very specialized setting: preferences may be different, or may not be different. But since we are trying hard to be inclusive in STEM fields, drawing conclusions from this study, without first knowing that breakdown, seems inadvisable.

@devanbu @Nature Sorry i do not agree: the study is helpful, it showed 75% of scientists prefer it. How can you say it is not helpful?

@vlfilkov @Nature ….the question this study is not about genpop drinking breakdown, it’s about whether scientists want to keep alcohol at conferences. Reporting simple majority results without a gender breakdown (given the male-dominance in STEM) is not helpful. I guess we agree on that.

@devanbu @Nature I am getting all confused here. I agree the study could have done other things to be more to your liking. I disagree that knowing the breakdown would be more interesting than what they already report. We already know in genpop similar % M & F prefer to drink.

@devanbu @Nature I don’t think it is relevant for their study: to understand if scientists prefer alcohol at conferences. and in the light of the other paper which reports 68% of men and 64% of women drink. Do you have evidence gender breakdown is any different for preference?
