Flashback to May 12, 1989 — 37 years ago today — when the swamps got even slimier and way more fun with the theatrical release of The Return of Swamp Thing!
Directed by the king of B-movie mayhem Jim Wynorski (Chopping Mall), this tongue-in-cheek sequel to the 1982 original cranks up the camp, the action, and the rad 80s practical effects while keeping that pure DC Comics swamp-monster soul alive.
The Cast is pure late-80s gold:
- Dick Durock returning as the moss-covered, heroic Swamp Thing himself (that suit looks wetter, greener, and meaner than ever).
- Heather Locklear as the veggie-loving, totally rad Abby Arcane.
- Louis Jourdan slinking back as the sinister, immortality-obsessed Dr. Anton Arcane.
- Sarah Douglas (yep, Ursa from Superman II) as the scheming Dr. Lana Zurrell.
The Story: After her mom’s mysterious death, Abby heads deep into the Florida swamps to face off with her evil stepdad Arcane. The doc’s cooking up a youth serum by mashing human and swamp-creature DNA, building an army of grotesque Un-Men mutants. When Arcane sets his sights on using Abby for his twisted experiments, Swamp Thing rises from the muck to protect her — leading to vine-swinging action, monster brawls, and even a little plant-based romance. It’s lighter and funnier than the first film, with that perfect 80s mix of cheese, heart, and heroics.
And let’s talk gnarly make-up effects! Bob Shelley’s crew and the practical FX team delivered some of the slimiest, mossiest, most tactile creature work of the era. The new Swamp Thing suit is a major upgrade — wet, verdant, and bursting with swampy detail. The Un-Men mutants? Hideous, rubbery, slime-dripping nightmares that scream “practical effects glory.” No CGI here, just pure foam latex, greasepaint, and late-night workshop magic that still holds up today.
If you’re craving that pure 80s swamp nostalgia — comic book covers over Creedence Clearwater Revival, over-the-top mutant fights, and a hero who’s literally part of the bayou — pop this one in the VCR (or your modern player). It’s gloriously gnarly, cheesy fun!
