Founder of Asinakuthula Collective which hosts the Maxeke-Mgqwetho Annual Lecture which commemorates Charlotte Maxeke and Nontsizi Mgqwetho and more broadly responds to black women’s historiography.

Athambile Masola is a lecturer at the University of Pretoria, English Department. She is a fellow at the Archive and Public Cultures at the University of Cape Town.

The talk will also explore the history of multilingualism and the development of African languages through the black press. While Ilanga and Isolezwe remain as African language newspapers, there’s a rich heritage of African languages in print media.

This talk will explore the tradition of the black press and the implications it has for the contemporary media culture. Invoking the pioneering contributions of Daisy Makiwane and Nontsizi Mgqetho.

In 1884 John Tengo Jabavu launched Imvo Zabantsundu, the first newspaper launched by an African, breaking away from the missionary-influenced publication and the public sphere.
