Louisiana Gov Jeff Landry is all in for Rep Julia Letlow as he tries to oust Bill Cassidy. But his pressure campaign is frustrating some Republicans. “It’s a gamble that could pay off big or drain his political capital.” politico.com/news/2026/05/1…

New: Sen. Rand Paul’s son drunkenly accosted and hurled anti-Semitic insults at Rep. Mike Lawler at a Capitol Hill bar on Tuesday night. His son told Lawler that if Rep Thomas Massie loses, it’s going to be because of “your people.” “My people?” Lawler asked Paul. “Yeah, you Jews,” Paul responded.  “Do you think I’m Jewish?” Lawler asked. “I’m not.” “Oh wow, I’m so sorry for calling you a Jew,” Paul said.  He then said that Jews were “anti-American” and how Lawler and his “Jewish supporters” served Israel more than America. notus.org/congress/willi…

Growing opposition from House Rs on the ballroom project Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick says the Senate needs to scrap the whole thing Massie: “The ballroom? With public money? Mhm … probably not.” One House R is going as far as to predict that a ballroom won’t be in a Senate-passed bill by the time it reaches the House

I asked @POTUS how the rising price of his ballroom (nearly x2 original estimate) and reflecting pool makeover (x7 original estimate) are any different than why he wanted to remove Fed Chair Jerome Powell for 30% cost overruns. Here’s his response:

Sen. Kennedy says he's drafting language for an amendment that would pay for the $1B ballroom/security project by "reducing the $72B of [DHS's] operational budget to $71B." This is an effort to avoid adding to the federal deficit, he says. Kennedy doesn't know if there's appetite for the potential measure. He said he hasn't heard from Trump directly, but has talked w/ WH staff and "they seemed okay with it."

Collins, however, isn't exactly thrilled at the idea of bypassing the Approps Committee to fund the project: "If there are some needs for new training ranges, for example, that should've been in the president's budget."

Senate Rs are still skeptical of the details around the $1B ballroom project following a briefing w/ USSS Director Sean Curran. A number of them are asking for further detail. Young: "I could be supportive of more security funding.
I could be supportive of a certain measure of ballroom funding, which I think is defensible. But they need to go back and get us more details about how they arrived at the figure." Rick Scott: "I think bottom line, people want to be supportive. They want security for the president. But they want more detail. Tillis: "I think part of what we have to do is be clear on what the $1B is for. ... Because otherwise, it just looks like a billion dollars going into something that we all thought was going to cost around $400 million that was paid for by private contributions."

Cassidy weighs in on the resignation of former FDA commissioner Makary The HELP chair isn’t the only one criticizing Makary’s tenure. Hawley went off on his record on abortion pill mifepristone: “It’s hard to be more flippant and off putting towards the pro-life [community]. I mean, if he had thought about how to do it and made a list on what are the ways that I could really make the most people angry in the pro-life movement, he couldn't have done better than that.”
U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D.@SenBillCassidy

Dr. Makary was part of a broader symptom of an administration that has not paid attention to pro-life issues. I care deeply about life, and I anticipate the next FDA nominee shall as well.

NEWS: 4 members of the Louisiana GOP's governing body are now rescinding their endorsements of John Fleming following our reporting, while one endorsement was considered invalid by the LAGOP Executive Board. This brings Fleming below the threshold that allows him to ask for the LAGOP's endorsement in his bid against Cassidy + Letlow. While it’s unclear which members requested the rescissions, RSCC members who spoke to National Journal pointed to the sensitive nature of the endorsements and the optics of going against a candidate who has been endorsed by both Trump + Gov. Jeff Landry. The majority of endorsements submitted by Fleming were from before Letlow jumped into the race. One RSCC member said the rescinding of endorsements came down to the paperwork being leaked to media from the Fleming campaign, and some members wanting to flip their endorsements to support Letlow. Another pointed to the potential consequences of going against Gov. Landry. “There’s a lot of fear from Republicans because the governor is kind of vindictive,” one member said.
