Our #TreeofLife endeavours rest on the incredible #phylogenomic wealth of the world’s natural history collections. We owe a huge debt to those #herbarium collectors and curators whose treasures we now decipher genetically in the lab. @KewScience #PAFTOL

First discovered as fruits in the tombs of ancient Egypt, the argun palm (Medemia argun) is accurately listed on @IUCNRedList at last. This rare and vulnerable Nubian desert palm is severely threatened by gold mining and climate change. @KewScience iucnredlist.org/species/30401/…

Palm #FunFact: the leaves of Kerriodoxa elegans are often chewed by fruit #bats to create a roost. Today, the bats aren't home so I can safely stand underneath. Interestingly, this also happens at Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden, far North of the #palm's native range. @EcoinfAU

Very grateful to Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden for letting us use their facilities and showing me their amazing living #palm collection (here: Kerriodoxa elegans, a southern Thailand endemic). Already arranged to come back next year and spend more time. #floraofthailand @EcoinfAU

Tremendously enjoyable day in the dry dipterocarp forest of Ob Khan NP in N Thailand, together with their super knowledgeable and helpful rangers. Not many palms (just Phoenix loureiroi), but plenty other #plants to collect for the #herbarium, and lots of hills to climb...
