We're back for Season 5! This semester, your hosts @husbrian & @adatseng will be looking back at the history of films that involve Asian Americans in Asia.

who, when they come back, sometimes look and act differently, sometimes can't speak the language very well anymore... and sometimes successfully convince Asian record labels that they can rap.

Now, we'll be looking at the stereotypes Asians have of Americans, immigration from the perspective of the home country and how exactly these ideas affect their perceptions of Asian Americans (of multiple generations)...

We gave our podcast listeners a long Winter break, but we're coming back for our 2019 Spring Semester: Season 6 of Saturday School, our Asian American pop culture history podcast. Last season, Brian Hu and I explored Asian Americans in Asia. This semester, we're flipping it.

Then we spend the rest of the episode ranting about Daniel Henney (and his hotness) as a symbol of the evolving possibilities for Asian American actors in Hollywood. Shout-out to @haikushotties

Out of all the various Asian Americans from different countries who have gone back to Asia to pursue entertainment, Vietnamese Americans have probably been the most successful. They've been able to consistently knock out box office hits for the local Vietnamese market.

The Vietnamese American community rallied together not only to fund this movie but to share their oral histories to help Ham Tran make something that their children and grandchildren could see, experience, and hopefully understand. And it still resonates today.

There's a scene in the film on the boat with when the mother is looking at her young son and wondering - Will our children miss our homeland like we do? Will they ever understand? And Journey From The Fall is kind of the complex answer to that.
