Founded in Los Angeles, California in the 1950s by Herb Reed, The Platters emerged as one of the most important Black American vocal groups of the early rock-and-roll era, helping define a style that moved gracefully between rhythm and blues, doo-wop, and popular balladry. The classic lineup of group members includes Reed, Tony Williams, Zola Taylor, David Lynch, and Paul Robi, whose refined harmonies carried signature recordings such as “Only You,” “The Great Pretender,” and “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” into the permanent canon of American popular music. In the 90s, The Platters’ historical significance was affirmed by their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998.
