I grew up in Itire, Surulere. Let me take you back…
First lesson: PRIVACY IS A MYTH.
You can’t whisper in peace. Before you finish your sentence, 3 neighbours have already formed an opinion.
One person is cooking but the whole compound is perceiving it.
That smell will be moving from room to room like breaking news.
Toilet/bathroom?
You wake up late = you suffer.
Had it been there's a phone back then you will be pressing the phone outside, waiting for your turn like it’s an interview 😭
One TV = national assembly 📺
Remote control? Forget it.
If elders are watching, you too are watching.
Discipline in the compound is democratic. Any adult can flog you.
And still report you to your parents for bonus beating 💀
But the love? Unmatched ❤️
You can enter any room, drink water, gist, even eat. Nobody will ask “who are you?”
Evening time = social hour.
No light? No problem.
Everyone sits outside gist, laugh, argue, repeat.
Games? We didn’t need gadgets.
Football, suwe, ten-ten, police & thief. We created fun from nothing.
I didn’t even leave Lagos till I got admission into The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
That was when I realized…
ahh, people actually grow up differently? 😅
But one thing is for sure. That kind of life builds you.
You become sharp, strong, and very aware.
Lowkey… I won’t trade those memories for anything.
