we @NativeMag kickstarted a new collaboration with Apple Music around their Africa Now Radio to spotlight some of the most vital voices in African music on web and socials. The first artist up is @lyrxx_official , a special singer from Ibadan.

When people say “Music should document the times”, many assume it has to be political consciousness or heavy social commentary, but that’s a narrow understanding of what documenting actually means. A dance or Pop record or even a love song can document a period just as clearly as a protest record; sometimes even better. Pana by Tekno, Runtown’s Mad over you and Mr Eazi’s Leg over are prime examples of songs that captured the actual beginning of Afrobeats to the world, the slowed down version of our pop records, you don’t need a lyric about politics or social commentary to hear 2016-2017 in those songs. Ozumba Mbadiwe by Reekado Banks is not social commentary but it documented the End Sars protest and everything around it as much as 20-10-20 by Burna Boy, just from a different emotional angle. Both are history. (There are loads of examples) Music doesn’t only archive pain, struggle or politics, it documents vibes, tempo, slangs, nightlife, romance, trends and all the other emotions of how people felt while living life. So we need to stop reducing “documenting the times” to only protest records, sometimes the club records is the most accurate time stamp a culture leaves behind.

Our second cover of the year is out, and it’s the story of Theodora’s disobedient groove. In her own words, she’s “Sexy, Ghetto, Africky et Mal Polie,” and proud. Shoutout to everyone that worked on this story—print soon. Read here: lnkd.in/dg2vnbMs
