Happy #IndependenceDay to all my American friends, colleagues, and fellows! Celebrating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the #US means a lot of things but above all it means celebrating an enduring idea: that curiosity, freedom, innovation, and opportunity can change the world. Throughout its history, America has been a beacon for scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, and dreamers from every corner of the globe. The American Dream continues to inspire generations, not because the journey is always easy, but because it reminds us that bold ideas, hard work, and perseverance can overcome even the most challenging times and produce progress. As someone whose scientific career was profoundly shaped by my wonderful years in the US, I continue to be deeply grateful for the friendships, collaborations, and opportunities that continue to unite our international research community. Wishing everyone a joyful and inspiring Fourth of July. 🇺🇸 Happy Independence Day! #IndependenceDay #July4 #Science #Innovation #Engineering #AmericanDream #InternationalCollaboration

Can we program materials to steer, or even cloak, mechanical waves? That was the question behind my presentation, "Reconfigurable Origami Metamaterials for Wave Steering and Cloaking," at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR)-sponsored Workshop on Multifunctional Materials and Intelligent Structures in Rome. This work is the result of a fantastic collaboration with my co-PI Giulia Lanzara and our team: Enrico Corradini, Sawan Guruva, Riccardo Grammatico, and Peihua Ni. By exploiting nonlinear local resonances, we developed reconfigurable origami metamaterials capable of manipulating elastic waves. We also leveraged deep learning AI to optimize the metamaterial architecture and significantly broaden its operational bandwidth, an important step toward adaptive wave steering and cloaking. It was exciting to see the interest, insightful questions, and stimulating discussions generated by our results. Wave cloaking is no longer just a fascinating concept, it is steadily becoming a realistic engineering objective. Many thanks to #EOARD and #AFOSR for supporting this research and helping advance the next generation of multifunctional metamaterials. #Metamaterials #Origami #WaveCloaking #WaveSteering #ArtificialIntelligence #DeepLearning #MechanicalMetamaterials #Engineering #AFOSR #EOARD

The Future of Intelligent Materials Starts Here. What happens when leading scientists in multifunctional materials, intelligent structures, metamaterials, AI, advanced manufacturing, and aerospace engineering come together, not for a conference, but for an intensive, invitation-only workshop? Last week, Rome hosted the @AFOSR Air Force Office of Scientific Research-sponsored International Workshop on Multifunctional Materials and Intelligent Structures: New Design Paradigms for Extreme and Multi-Field Environments, co-organized by the University of RomaTre and Sapienza Università di Roma (co-chairs Giulia Lanzara and @walterlacarbona). Over two inspiring days, 35 participants from universities, government laboratories, and industry shared 3 keynote lectures, 21 technical presentations, and big ideas that will help shape the next generation of materials and intelligent systems. The science was outstanding. But perhaps the most valuable outcome was something less tangible: a renewed commitment to strengthening the community that has grown around this field over the years through the vision and leadership of Dr. "Les" Lee. The technologies discussed, from physical #AI and reservoir computing to nonlinear metamaterials, structural batteries, self-healing composites, morphing aerospace structures, and intelligent materials capable of sensing, adapting, and computing, are redefining what materials can do and opening entirely new engineering paradigms. A heartfelt thank you to the #AFOSR for its continued vision and support, to all the speakers and participants for their exceptional contributions, and to everyone who helped make this workshop such a great experience. Great ideas change science. Strong communities change the future. #AFOSR #MultifunctionalMaterials #IntelligentStructures #Metamaterials #SmartMaterials #PhysicalAI #AdvancedManufacturing #Aerospace #Engineering #Research #Innovation #Sapienza #RomaTre

This is the sunset from my place, layers of pines, rooftops, and a sky that seems to remember every shade of history. What fascinates me most is the thought that, in some way, this might not be so different from what the #Romans themselves saw two thousand years ago. The same horizon. The same light fading over the pine trees. The same quiet transition from day to night. There’s something powerful in that continuity, beauty that doesn’t belong to a moment, but to time itself. This is why I love #Rome. And why, no matter where I go, I struggle to find a place that feels quite like it. #Rome #Sunset #EternalCity #Perspective #BeautyInTime
