We often describe Urbit with big technological phrases like "self-sovereign, cryptographically-owned identity" or "deterministic operating function" or "solid state interpreter running on a distributed and end-to-end encrypted peer-to-peer network".
Sorry. We'll do better.
Your Urbit is Yours.
Everything else is just implementation details. Lessons learned observing decades of incentives and outcomes in networked computing.
The spam, the centralization, the data exploitation, the spying... It all happens because your computer isn't yours. And your computer isn't yours because it was never designed to be networked. It was never structured to be maintained by it's owner.
Urbit is an endeavor to build a forever computer. A ground-up rewrite of the networked computing stack to fix the trendline towards endless complexity, unmanageable in a way that retains practical control by individuals of their computers.
It is for these reasons that we use insane propositions like:
- Nouns as a single foundational data type
- Nock as a dead simple instruction set architecture
- Hoon parlance disconnected from legacy vocabulary
- Urbit OS (Arvo) as a pure function of its inputs
- Urbit ID as a cryptographically owned hierarchical namespace
- Kelvin versioning, where code eventually stops updating and becomes 'frozen'
Again, these are implementation details. Necessary for building a world where our digital lives can last--where they can truly belong to us. Where computers can be passed down generation to generation, like a family home.
But perhaps that is still to much to explan. So...What is urbit?
A computer you can trust to be yours, forever.

@medkemiacrosser @itsfolf Sorry for a $10 word when a $1 word would suffice: "yours."

I'm building these 25 nockapps on @nockchain this weekend $NOCK
1. one block — A page where lines you post live for exactly one block then vanish forever, while their hashes persist on chain as gravestones.
2. Constellation — A growing night sky where each Nockchain block becomes a star, named permanently by whoever pays first.
3. Notary.nock — OpenTimestamps but with optional selective-disclosure proofs of document properties.
4. Witness — Post a sentence with a ZK proof that you belong to a specific group without revealing which member you are.
5. NockGraph — A public append-only collaborative knowledge graph where contributors stake reputation on claims and disputes resolve via prediction markets.
6. Last Words — Sealed messages to specific recipients, released by time lock or deadman switch, anchored permanently on chain.
7. Quiet Vote — Sealed-ballot voting for small groups where only the tally is ever revealed, never individual votes.
8. Proof of Receipt — Anonymous tipping with cryptographic receipts the tipper can show without revealing amount or wallet.
9. The Patience Game — A single global counter on chain that anyone can increment for a logarithmically rising NOCK fee.
10. Chain-of-Custody — QR-coded objects whose ownership history is tracked on chain with privacy for handlers and verifiability for inspectors.
11. Reproducible Receipt — Submit a computation and get back a ZK proof that the computation ran as claimed.
12. Provenance Camera — A mobile app that signs photos at capture time with device attestation, anchoring them to Nockchain for tamper-evident use.
13. Sealed Auction — One-shot commit-reveal sealed-bid auctions where only the winning bid is ever revealed, others stay sealed forever.
14. Trustless Escrow — Time-locked NOCK escrow with ZK-proven release conditions for work between strangers.
15. The Long Pour — A continuous public poem where anyone can append a line, with no edits, no deletes, no repeats.
16. Eulogy — Encrypted messages released only when a trustee scheme confirms the sender has died.
17. Lighthouse — A map of an imaginary coastline where the current block hash decides where short messages land.
18. Wager — Private one-on-one bets between friends, settled by an oracle, with the bet itself staying off public chain.
19. Anonymous Praise — Send signed compliments that prove they came from someone in the recipient's trusted circle without revealing who.
20. The Sundial — A rotating dial completing one revolution per ~900 blocks where users post wishes at the current angle, overwritten each revolution.
21. Proof of Reading — Authors post a hash of their work; readers prove they've read it via ZK quiz, building a public ledger of who actually read what.
22. Permanent Press — Encrypted whistleblower documents with delayed-release locks and group-membership proofs for source verification.
23. The Quilt — A finite 256×256 mosaic where each cell is a tradeable UTXO carrying color, text, and a link.
24. Time Capsule Hash — Submit a sealed prediction now; reveal yourself months later by publishing the preimage and proving you knew first.
25. Verifiable Surveys — Anonymous surveys where participants prove eligibility without revealing identity, with tamper-evident aggregate results.

I kinda hate the name validators, because it's not Proof-of-Stake. But miners and provers doesn't really cover what they do either, because it's not strictly Proof-of-Work. So what should it be? Computers? Machines?
octra@octra
existing and new validators, please see discord announcement about upcoming node release make sure you have 10k $oct on the wallet you submitted last year, or plan to submit please stay tuned as there will be no spoonfeeding or waiting on anyone, the useful work starts now

@trading_axe that's a very gay way of reasoning but it is also very true so whatever

@wangluolingxing These will be @urbit spirits based on @urbitfavelas. This is a long time coming and they will be connected to something big I'll be publishing within one year. All part of a much bigger plan.

@puusheydakat @wiggerborea oh noooo babe there is no user on that novel pre-alpha chain building in public an infrastructure that never existed before for which the market is expected to be >$10B by 2030 holy shit let me post it on the everything app real quick so everybody knows i'm a retard

This means @nockchain can prove massive amounts of data without the latency that usually kills decentralized compute. It’s the engine that actually makes the ZK-speed thesis possible.
Ima wait for @loganallc words
The guy is a legend, and am actually bidding on him.

By integrating PMA (Persistent Memory Arena), the Nock ZKVM can gets a dedicated, high-speed environment to operate in. It can removes the 'memory bottleneck' that slows down other chains.
