Big win for free expression in Kenya 🇰🇪 This morning, the Court of Appeal ruled in favour of #FreedomOfExpression. The government can’t shut down art with force or take parts of artists’ work. This case started with #Rafiki, but it protects all of us. The Constitution stands!

At a protest. About the killing. Of a Kenyan. In the police custody. A police officer. Shot an unarmed man. In the head. And casually walked away. An unarmed man. Selling masks. Minding his business. Shot in the head. Literally minding his business.

There is no legitimacy that can be claimed by an administration that attacks its children. The most vulnerable for whose benefit every decision must be made, and every necessary action taken, have been turned to victims of state overreach and police impunity. The people of Kenya can endure a lot, tolerate as much, and even condone some, but we can never be onlookers as our children are maimed for participating in extra-curricular activities that have historically produced and nurtured our best talents. The leadership of the @NPSOfficial_KE must be held accountable for this insanity.

I hope you don't dim your muchness. This is to everyone who gets told they are too much, too complex, too ambitious, too expressive, too anything that makes you brave, fiery, resilient, and loud.

"Hard times are coming when we'll be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now, can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine real grounds for hope…

Words fail me because of the overwhelming love and support you have shown me. I’m free. To the comrades who spent the night outside Kamukunji Police Station to protect me and ensure l was not moved in the middle of the night, asanteni. To my family, the legal team, and every Kenyan who stood by me, may God bless and protect you. I was arrested in front of my children, and l wasn’t informed of the reason for my arrest. The police tracked me through my phone’s service provider without a warrant and also carried out an illegal search of our home. Such things shouldn’t be happening in a democracy, and a country in which the President himself publicly claims that his is a government that respects the rule of law. But are we really a democracy? Which democracy shoots unarmed children and arrests citizens for displaying their national flag? The intimidation will not stop me Moving forward, Mambo Ni Matatu, that active citizens must focus on… Mambo Ni Matatu 1. Justice. Prosecution of Japheth Koome and the field commanders on duty when peaceful protesters were murdered. Arrest and prosecution of individual officers who discharged their firearms unlawfully. Compensation for victims of the police killings. Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki isn’t fit to hold public office. Under his leadership, citizens have been abducted and murdered, and there has been a dramatic increase in femicides. Promoting him to Deputy President for murdering children is entrenching impunity and lawlessness. 2. Right to Citizenship. You cannot deny or sell us our national identity cards. It’s important that all Kenyans who have reached the age of 18 get issued with a voters card. It’s unconstitutional and illegal to deny citizens ID cards. Demand IDs and voters cards. 3. Accountability. His manifesto. Implementation of all constitutional reports. Debt audit. He fired incompetence and rehired rapists, murderers, and drug dealers. And most importantly, Ruto Must Go is the clarion call. The struggle continues… #RutoMustGo
