Everything has become reality tv. I try to pinpoint when it began. Was it the OJ Simpson trial or the Monica Lewinsky scandal, the 24/7 news cycle of the 90s where private tragedies burst into public spectacles? Then I think of the flashing bulbs of the paparazzi following the tall starving girls of the early aughts while The Hills and The Kardashians purported to show their lives, the paparazzi never visible somehow in the carefully curated "realities" presented. Then there was the reality tv President, the first one being Obama not Trump in my opinion, although both qualify. Celebrities more than politicians who understood how to work a camera, a room, create a spectacle out of their very presence. Then we all turned the cameras on ourselves. In Milan last week I passed person after person filming themselves, curating their own mini reality tv shows. It gets confusing, to even know when you're in the moment and when you're posing for a camera. Even with friends so often you're being filmed, clipped, presented for some audience somewhere. It feels rude to decline, why wouldn't you want to be in a picture with your friends? It's endless and nauseating and intoxicating and it feels like there's no end. The line between reality and media will blur and blur and blur, the pharmaceuticals will get better and better, the technology will get better, the ai will get better. It's a hyper reality, it feels like its all a set, and we're just sort of on it.
