@ChayasClan Interesting, and now do your best to reconstruct Aunt Polly’s egg salad recipe. All I know is everyone made a beeline for it and polished it off fast!

Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the Supreme Leader, has just been appointed as the new Ayatollah. But who is he? He is ten times more dangerous than his father.    •   He is the guardian who never leaves his father’s shadow.    •   He runs his father’s office.    •   He is the one who tweets from his father’s account.    •   He is very close to the leaders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Quds Force, and the Basij.    •   He is the one who orders the execution of protesters.    •   He is the one who shut down the internet, against Pezeshkian’s wishes.    •   He is the most influential figure in Iran.    •   He is the man before whom Qassem Soleimani used to bow.    •   He is the most dangerous man in Iran. (Abu Saleh)

@Bellorris @ScottJenningsKY Could you give me a beginner’s reading list of four Pindar odes and why each one is recommendable? Add a couple of fragments with Snell-Maehler numbers and brief descriptions

@ScottJenningsKY That’s definitely how some people are interpreting it. Others would argue it was more about disagreement over policy language than refusing allegiance to citizens. In moments like that, symbolism tends to get amplified depending on which side you’re on.

Moment of the night: Democrats refusing to stand to affirm their allegiance to American citizens over illegal aliens. Will be signature moment of this speech. Trump nailed them.

@azali_bolingo Classical theism is the consensus from the Cappadocians to Aquinas to Calvin… what Tillich is flailing around to get past

Prob the Single most positive development (impact wise) in my theological development has been giving up classical theism. Seems crazy, in hindsight, that I was ever on board with this stuff. Just a ridiculous abandonment of all common sense

This is me, more or less (though ‘Charismatic Anglican’ would probably be more accurate). I’m pretty ecumenical, so would never mark any Trinitarian tradition as ‘Highly Questionable’.

@LeahLibresco Good… but won’t hold my breath waiting for Left half of my TL and of the world to respond to this clarion call to teach Oresteia and Dante. Maybe just maybe the post AI hunger for offline authenticity can help in that direction

Any other Catholics (or those of other denominations and faiths) feel weird singing hymns that are in God's voice, not addressed to Him or about Him? I love to sing, but I always feel uncomfortable jumping into hymns like this one (from the '80s). But maybe I'm overreacting?

@Alexkennedy310 The reviews were all positive until the fake negative ones started piling up this week. I used to teach at Union College. Whatever else you might believe about Khatami and his descendants, you should at least skip the lie that she isn’t a good math professor.

I fear that grading has made me paranoid and inclined to see AI everywhere, but it's hard to shake a certain feeling about this introduction from a recent BMCR review.

Due to the uniformity, design, and color of the titles on the bookshelves in Goodnight Moon I am forced to assume that the bunny is getting a Greek & Latin education through the Loeb Classical Library.

I have just been given an INDUSTRIAL quantity of “west gallery” music/psalmody etc. Might have to form a Society for the Godly Singing of Metrical Psalms (as was popular at the turn of C18) meeting in my flat. Anyone interested?

@roddysteves Absolutely. If you’re not reading it in Greek this gets you nearer than anything else. Maybe not *as* readable as Fagles, but it’s readable and real poetry too, not a wooden crib in the least.

My personal ranking of Odyssey translations: Wilson is better for ideological honesty about slavery, sex, and violence, but Fagles is better poetry. However, reading the Iliad, I'm finding that Fagles' poetry is soporifically opaque, while Wilson's stark clarity is refreshing.

@roddysteves Probably the only Fagles translation I really admire is his Penguin Three Theban Plays. There he really tunes into Sophocles the poet
