On This Day — November 12, 1954 After welcoming more than 12 million immigrants to America, Ellis Island officially closed its doors on this day in 1954. For generations, the island stood as a symbol of hope and opportunity; the first glimpse of a new beginning for families from around the world seeking freedom and a better life. Though the immigration station has long since closed, the legacy of Ellis Island lives on in the stories of those who passed through its halls and in the diverse spirit of America itself. Today, the site remains a powerful reminder that our nation was built by dreamers, doers, and those brave enough to start anew.
