On the culture wars surrounding the Odyssey: the film is a masterpiece. It’s a cinematic triumph. Nolan’s reimagining beautifully and powerfully captures the core (and numerous) morality tales in the original poem. You’d have to truly search to be offended by this film. Example: Elliot Page does not play Achilles, but the role Elliot does play is well cast and extremely well executed by Page. Lupita Nyong'o’s two roles are small but powerful. I’m certain there are far more of us who personally don’t care that she’s not cast as a traditional blonde & who find Lupita to be stunningly beautiful than those who will actually be offended by her casting. The film, like the original story, is about devotion to family, upholding institutions, and honoring faith. Last time I checked those were all conservative virtues. Try to hate Christopher Nolan all you want, but he’s just too good to knock.
