Repeated breath holds produce an effect "similar to blood doping": the spleen contracts to release a reserve of fresh oxygen-carrying red blood cells. Could this boost running endurance? Previous research has been iffy, but a new study is more optimistic. outsideonline.com/health/trainin…

Michael Kalinski’s work on ergogenic aids research in the USSR is widely recognized. In our latest publication, we focus on the studies of blood transfusions in Soviet sports. These studies informed recommendations for using blood transfusions during Olympic Games, which played a role in the Soviet Union’s significant medal success at the 1976 Innsbruck and Montreal Olympics, as well as the 1980 Lake Placid Games. While the topic is controversial, it is worth noting that blood transfusions were only banned in sports in 1985, following a scandal involving American cyclists at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. We hope our publication contributes a meaningful addition to the history of global sports. researchgate.net/publication/38…

@Nyborger_Nybo @morten_hostrup @DrMJoyner @iljukov @honestsport_ew @sweatscience @VictorConte @RAnneShirley @ShalayaKipp @TStellingwerff @ChrisMinson half life of CO (for elimination) is ~300 min. Less when exercising because of a higher minute ventilation. SO the transient decrease in CaO2 is maintained longer. However, vs. a N2 House or hypoxic tent, the effect is not better with CO for an increased erythropoiesis.
