Elkhart, Indiana: Police shot and killed a 17-year-old who had multiple handguns in and around the vehicle. According to an Elkhart Police Department release, an officer spotted a suspicious vehicle in the High Dive Park Pavilion parking lot around 1:36 a.m. on February 8, 2026, well after the park had closed and past Indiana's curfew for minors. The officer approached the adult driver and noted several male and female passengers inside, including some juveniles. A second officer soon arrived for backup. At approximately 1:49 a.m., both officers fired their weapons, striking one male occupant. They provided immediate first aid, and Elkhart City Fire Department medics responded quickly to transport the injured individual to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. One officer sustained a minor injury during the incident but didn't need on-scene medical care. Authorities recovered multiple handguns from inside and around the vehicle, along with the officers' service weapons, for further examination. The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is leading the ongoing investigation, as is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings. Both officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending review.
