This also confirms that she is not a vampire squid, as those are more closely related to octopuses and are named as such in Japanese. Additionally, other characters like Lionel, Jessika, and Tao Blue are given specific species of octopus and squid respectively in the artbook.

@KitanoStan damn, sorry about that. at this point it might just be better to wait -- i'm not adding much bancalawalker information yet until i have reliable translations for all of them, mostly just unknown instruments, species, and names in the case of riot act

@KitanoStan like Oonie also took some getting used to but she's a character i think about frequently enough that at this point i've fully adjusted to it

@KitanoStan LMAO yeah, zuzu is one of the localized names i still haven't gotten used to. kind of in that awkward spot of "she's a character i've thought about enough that i'm used to her old name, but not one enough that her localized name has caught on for me yet"

@rassicas do we have a known species for tosh? i feel like they've kind of been a point of Who The Hell Knows for so long that i'd love to get some closure there

ah btw, confirmed species mentioned above Lionel: Mimic octopus (surprising!) Jessika: Ram's horn squid (also surprising, i thought it wouldve just been her namesake and not her actual species?) Tao Blu: Blue ringed octopus

@KitanoStan it seems to update around christmas, since it did in 2022 (that's when we got the english names) and 2023 (that's when we got the splatoon 3 bands that existed at the time) so maybe before too long???

@wayslidecool On a different note, this only shows Nintendo needs to do a better job displaying information. At least we have Splatoon base, I’m glad we do since I still wouldn’t know about Martin, but that website hasn’t been updated since last Christmas + it doesn’t talk about characters

@KitanoStan my favorite members of ink theory have changed a lot over time. early on it was kitamura and maya, after a while it moved to yoko and karen, but i think these days it's probably oonie (who's always been Up There for sure) sorry zuzu

@rassicas i bring this up because kitamura, who was generically listed as a sea urchin in haikarawalker, was given a more specific species this go around. curious if more out there inkling designs like mizo and keaton have specific species in mind

@rassicas it IS interesting getting confirmation that certain inklings/octolings are explicitly different species of squid and octopus, since i don't think that's something we really had any evidence of before. curious if this might retroactively apply to characters from previous games...

@KitanoStan this was a problem for me, because at the time, my favorite splatband character was kitamura. - "ink theory urchin" could also refer to oonie - "ink theory drummer" could also refer to maya - "urchin drummer" could also refer to murasaki so she was just. Ink Theory Urchin Drummer

@KitanoStan squid squad and wet floor had names but that was it, and even then their names were not well-known in the english speaking fandom. so you either had to a: just come up with fanon names (very rarely agreed upon) b: describe them by some combination of band, species, and instrument
