WDMFD responded to several calls for carbon monoxide (CO) alarms. In many cases, the alarm was not detecting CO but signaling end of life. Most CO alarms have a lifespan of 7 yrs. When they reach end of life, they will “chirp” every 30–60 sec to let you know to replace.

According to research from UL Solutions, in 2023 there were 445 incidents, 214 injuries & 38 fatalities related to lithium-ion battery fires in North America. Choose certified products. Handle devices with care. Stay alert for warning signs. Recycle batteries properly.

A little reminder for anyone driving this winter: make yourself a small winter emergency kit for the car. You never know when you might get stuck in snow or ice, and having things like blankets, snacks, water, & a flashlight can keep you safe and comfortable until help arrives.

Our firefighters were busy for Fire Prevention Month! Over 10,000 people reached! 6 community events 12 school visits 14 daycare visits 2 business fire safety presentations 2 senior facility visits 6 station tours 7 fire drills 5 holiday events 4 ride-alongs 4 home safety checks

Hey, West Des Moines! When you turn your clocks back this weekend, take a minute to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, too! It’s a small job that makes a big difference in keeping you and your family safe. "Change your clock, change your batteries".

WDMFD is trading fire helmets for candy buckets this Friday! We’ll be out in neighborhoods handing out treats (as long as we’re not on calls). If you see us, come say hi. We can’t wait to see all your spooktacular costumes! Trick-or-Treating is Friday, October 31, from 6-8.

WDMFD was dispatched last night to 534 S. 19th St. for a working fire. WDMPD assisted with evacuation of residents while fire crews began fighting the fire. No injuries were reported & five cats were rescued. Initial damage estimates are $60K & fire is under investigation.
