A foundation once told me they would never support Invisible People unless we stopped giving a voice to those still experiencing homelessness. They wanted us to focus solely on people who had already escaped it. That moment made clear why Invisible People hasn’t always received the same support as others. We were ahead of the curve, driving narrative change a decade before most of the homelessness sector even knew what that meant. Instead of following the status quo, we chose to amplify the voices of homeless people themselves—a move that some in the sector viewed negatively. The sector seemed determined to hide the growing reality of homelessness, even though it was happening right in front of everyone’s eyes. But it’s essential to tell both sides: the stories of those still experiencing homelessness and those who have overcome it. The voices of people who are no longer homeless validate the progress being made, but it’s the stories of those still struggling that build empathy and spark action. Since the sector mostly showcased success stories, I did the opposite—highlighting the voices of those still living through homelessness. We’ve reached billions, educating the public on homelessness with the limited resources we’ve had. It didn’t matter that we were reaching more people every month than all homeless services nonprofits combined—often with almost no budget. In 2010, for example, YouTube gave us their homepage for a day, helping us reach millions with the real, unfiltered stories of homelessness. For the first 10 years, we couldn’t afford to hire even one employee, and today we still struggle to hire a second. The potential for Invisible People to shift the narrative has always been unmatched—no one else has come close. But because we empowered homeless people to tell their own stories, revealing uncomfortable truths, we’ve often been treated as the black sheep of the homelessness sector. Our podcast on the lived and living experience of homelessness drops tomorrow, and it’s the most authentic conversation on this topic ever shared online. Here's another teaser clip. I truly hope you'll watch this episode—it's an incredibly important discussion that deserves attention.
