Caring for my Dad in his last chapter was such a privilege and I learned so much. Family care is hidden. Sometimes that isolation then makes things more distressing. #community and #familycarers need to see life with #dementia in the open, so we can all help each other. #connect

The Dementia Research Centre and Rare Dementia Support teams are asking current and former carers of people with dementia to participate in a short survey about the impact that caring for their loved one has had on their quality of life. There is a need for more evidence in this area and in particular, on how the impact on carers changes as dementia progresses from the early to later stages of the disease. We hope that this survey will help in starting to address this evidence gap. At Alzheimer’s Society we know the significant impact on unpaid carers and we want to make sure this is properly recognised by NICE. The Dementia Research Centre and Rare Dementia Support teams intend to share the findings from this survey with NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) who are currently giving further consideration to their assessment of the impact of dementia on unpaid carers, as part of their appraisals of the first two disease modifying treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. The findings will also be useful for future appraisals of new treatments. You can take part in the survey by by 11:59pm Sunday 26 April at: spkl.io/6019AfTWf

#AlzChat Our canary Captain Custard brought so much joy. Initially a friend and distraction for person with dementia. Then a help and laughter for everyone caring. Canary at Home Care Plan! And then even more years being a friend to grieve with. 🐥❤️

Some of you will remember my regular tweets during 2009-2015 when I was a family dementia carer. A key character in our circle of care was my Dad’s canary. He was due to live 6/7 years… he made it to 14.5! Sadly he fell asleep on Saturday for the last time… a job well done 💛

#AlzChat Reminiscing: Can be as therapeutic for you as a carer as it is for the person you care for. As a daughter I loved finding things out from the past that I wasn’t around for. It was good for calming my Dad down or distracting him if we were waiting at the hospital.

@creativitycare @IRememberBetter Wrote & produced a booklet with my mum about her life before she married my dad, and while she could still remember details of her childhood & youth. Included old b&w photos. Gave copy to her nursing home & staff really appreciated the chance to get to know her better #AlzChat
