Super interesting read, nautil.us/to-supercharge…. Really what [we] need to learn, they told us, are the “6 C’s”: 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐨́𝐧, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐨́𝐧, content, critical thinking, creative innovation, 𝐲 confidence." That's what we want to do @weevelanguages

Don't even try to remember the vocabulary when learning a new language. Just keep moving on, listening and reading, and eventually the words will start to stick. ow.ly/EAke50Knwsn

@AhmadibnRachid I rarely hear people use the word outside of the internet, “I’m an autodidactic learner” sounds like a grand statement vs “ahh I actually taught myself watching YouTube videos” which sounds chill

The word autodidacticism has been rubbing me the wrong way recently. I prefer the term self-guided learning. I know this is a minor semantic difference, but for the most part, autodidacts are not purely “self-taught” in the sense that they rely on materials created by others.

@MischaWilmers Modern AI models (like this year modern) are actually really amazing at it, for english we have GPT-3 and it’s near human level but pretty much all other languages their models are way worse, dunno what Chinese has

@DiglotSocial But how do you define 'word'? Computers are notoriously bad at figuring out when to consider a combination of characters a word and when not to. Not so simple.

I often hear people say Chinese is a 'huge' language, bigger than other languages with larger amount of vocab, phrases & idioms needed for mastery. I suspect this is an illusion caused by fact that acquisition = slower than other languages.

Heard a language teacher say the reason why sometimes subtitles don’t match the audio is because they want there to be less words on the screen to read… MY MIND IS BLOWN This makes sense but as a language learner this is annoying 😭😭😭

Will keep posted on this, as I’m sure you’re all aware making resources for a language I don’t speak sounds odd hahaha

I want to learn Ukrainian but there’s not much good comprehensible input for complete beginners and certainly none that’s interesting, gonna have to make some myself

If I could just run away and study another language just for the hell of it right now, then it would be Irish. You?

And in both cases the answer is 1. Just wait until you understand it clearly enough from getting lots of exposure 2. Don't worry about it

@purer_ethics I feel it’s also a bit to do with the feeling of helplessness, like you want to do something but can’t do anything, so at least I’ll try to be a little less ignorant
