onikanew-she/he who leads. When broken down, nik-nikihk -my home, nika-nikawiy means my mother. nikan- in front of. This (Cree) nēhiyaw word is a favourite, it reveals our community/governance structure. Mothers were/are our leaders because they are the front of our homes.

My choice is one of my 4 year old nephew’s favourite books. It’s in English,but I’ve translated it into Bosnian.I’ve read it to him in Bos so many times.I freestyle and Edi adds to the story,so it sounds diff to the original one. So now it’s our story,our book. #LanguageIsAVerb

I am fascinated by how we communicate affection in diff languages esp. in multiling homes. I got this postcard for my kids’ room when they were babies: “No one loves you like I do.” (One of my fave Polish stories from childhood is coincidentally about swans) #languageisaverb
