U.S. President Donald Trump has fired all 24 members of the National Science Board, the body that oversees the National Science Foundation. Many science advocates see it as the latest step by his administration to erode—some would say destroy—the independence of the 76-year-old research agency. scim.ag/4eGM0YS

Trump just fired all 24 members of the National Science Board. Every single one. By email. No warning. No reason given. The board has existed since 1950. The National Science Board is the independent body that oversees the National Science Foundation, the agency that distributes $9 billion in research grants every year. Its members are scientists and engineers from universities and industry. They serve six-year staggered terms specifically so they cross presidential administrations and stay independent of whoever is in power. On Friday, every single one of them got the same boilerplate email from Mary Sprowls of the Presidential Personnel Office: "On behalf of President Donald J Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position as a member of the National Science Board is terminated, effective immediately. Thank you for your service." That's it. That's the whole letter. For 76 years of institutional independence. The NSF funds the basic science behind MRIs. Cellphones. LASIK eye surgery. GPS. The internet itself. The Antarctic research stations. The deep-space telescopes. The research vessels mapping the ocean floor. Every breakthrough that made America the world's leader in science for the better part of a century traces back through grants this agency made and this board approved. The board chair, Victor McCrary, was actively advising Congress on Trump's proposed 55% cut to NSF's budget. The board was helping fight back. So Trump fired the board. Marvi Matos Rodriguez, one of the fired members, told reporters she had been reviewing an 80-page report as part of her board duties just days before being terminated. Keivan Stassun, a physicist at Vanderbilt, said NSF's leadership had already stopped responding to board oversight requests months ago. "We would ask them, 'Are you following board governance directives?' And their answer would be, in effect, 'We don't listen to you anymore.'" Now there's no board to answer to. Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California, the top Democrat on the House Science Committee, called it "the latest stupid move made by a president who continues to harm science and American innovation. Will the president fill the NSB with MAGA loyalists who won't stand up to him as he hands over our leadership in science to our adversaries?" That's the actual question. Because while Trump is firing American scientists, China is building research universities at a rate we cannot match. The CDC just buried a study showing vaccines work. RFK Jr. runs HHS. The EPA is gutted. The Forest Service is being broken. Half of American children are breathing dangerous air. And now the people who decide what gets researched in the United States have all been fired by email on a Friday afternoon.

I’ve spent the past weeks talking to #ME patients and carers in Wales. There is a spectrum of severity, but there are thousands in dark rooms across the country, unable to walk or talk. Tomos is one of them. Watch/listen/read on BBC Wales news today ⬇️ bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

I’m a chemist. I need to say this - because it’s getting dangerous out there. The biggest health myth in the world isn’t about vaccines. Or GMOs. Or fluoride. It’s the root of all of them. It’s called chemophobia - and it’s killing science. Fear of “chemicals” now drives vaccine rejection, GMO bans, food hysteria, and entire political movements. From tampons to tap water, people have been taught to fear chemistry - the very thing that keeps us alive. Chemophobia tells us: “Natural is good.” “Synthetic is bad.” That’s a lie. Botulinum toxin is 100% natural and one of the deadliest molecules known. Aspirin is synthetic and life-saving. We’ve gone from banning harmful substances for good reason…to banning safe, well-tested molecules for emotional reasons. You’ve seen the slogans: “If you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it.” “Paraben-free.” “Clean beauty.” They sound empowering. But they’re not science - they’re marketing. And they’re making the world dumber, poorer, and sicker. Your body doesn’t care if a molecule comes from a plant or a lab. Vitamin C is vitamin C. Formaldehyde is formaldehyde and your body makes more of it every day than any vaccine ever could. Dose matters. Source doesn’t. This fear isn’t harmless. It shapes public policy. It blocks innovation. It raises food prices. It slows down cancer treatments. Chemophobia is now mainstream and it’s costing lives. Scientists aren’t losing because we’re wrong. We’re losing because fear spreads faster than facts. Because influencers sell fear for clicks. Because lawyers monetize doubt. And because scientists are too tired to fight back. So here’s my message, as a chemist and as a citizen: Learn how toxicology works. Call out chemical fear-mongering. Support policies based on evidence, not emotion. Chemistry isn’t the enemy. It’s the reason you have clean water, safe food, and modern medicine. If we let fear win, we lose all of it.

From James Hodge on Facebook “One man shoved a woman to the ground. Another man stepped in to protect the woman. The man who shoved the woman then pepper sprayed the man trying to protect her. The guy who shoved the woman continued to pepper spray them both and the man who stepped in tried to use his body as a shield to protect the woman. The guy who shoved the woman then started trying to drag the man shielding the woman away. The woman shoving man failed to drag the man shielding the woman so several more men jumped in to stop the man from shielding the woman. The woman shover and his friends then stomped, punched, and kicked the man who had been trying to shield the woman. As they assaulted him they realized the shielding man had a holstered gun. The shielding man fought to get free to protect the woman, but never reached for his gun. One of the stomping men grabbed the shielding man’s gun and cleared himself before a single shot was fired. The other men then, after he had been disarmed, shot the shielding man ten or more times despite never having reached for his gun and after he’d already been disarmed. That is exactly what happened. A man was murdered for trying to protect a woman who’d been assaulted. He wasn’t a terrorist, he was a hero. He was the one protecting someone and he was gunned down for doing what any decent man should do when he sees a woman being assaulted. Alex Pretti died a hero. Alex Pretti exemplified the best of America and was murdered for it. If you have any honor, any love for your country, and basic human decency, you will applaud the Alex Pretti and condemn the men who murdered him.”

Okay so, 1) an American citizen exercises his First Amendment right to peaceably assemble and his Second Amendment right to bear arms, out of apparent concern that a tyrannical federal government is violating basic protections afforded under the Constitution 2) after coming to the aid of an unarmed woman who's been shoved to the ground by a masked federal agent, the citizen -- impaired by pepper spray, holding nothing but a cell phone -- is dragged to the ground by a group of other masked agents 3) during the scuffle, shortly after one masked agent removes the weapon from the restrained citizen's person, several other masked agents open fire, unloading 10 shots from close range and killing the unarmed citizen 4) despite video evidence, a spokesman for the federal government says the citizen approached agents with a gun, provoked a violent confrontation, and planned to "massacre" law enforcement You really want to defend this? Go ahead. Just know, you look like an absolute fool.

Whenever I have a viral post (my definition is >250K views), I feel some kind of weird obligation to use that opportunity to warn and educate more people. Deep down, I know new followers can’t handle the truth and they’re gone before getting to the TLDR. But here goes: COVID causes permanent brain damage and immune system dysfunction. It’s why everyone’s sick. Public messaging has downplayed COVID’s risks because corporations, employers, and politicians benefit from inaction. Protecting people costs money, and they’d rather you stay sick than force change. The problem is that life is not sustainable from a pathogen that does this kind of destruction. Repeat infections do cumulative damage. People are already struggling with brain fog and exhaustion, and it’s only getting worse. The systems we rely on won’t hold when so many are mentally and physically deteriorating. But you don’t have to play along. Take control: wear a respirator, filter your air, push for clean indoor air standards. Sharing is caring. Why should you protect your body and brain? Read my published Letter to Mensa. uofi.box.com/s/to7acbvjeh67… Also check out my Covid Cautious Survival Guide (the terms you forgot or never knew) - a field guide to the pandemic reality everyone wants to ignore. - Find more resources on the the Covid Toolbox covidtoolbox.com/resources/ The artwork has been modified because it’s #longcovidawareness month. ME/CFS is a different condition but many people with Long Covid have been diagnosed as having ME/CFS. Covid causes Long Covid. ME/CFS can be caused by all sorts of things. Recognizing this distinction is important to the LC Community I advocate for, but it in no way is meant to diminish the decades of dismissiveness those with ME/CFS have faced. The artwork now includes both. Let’s push for research and treatments for both! Original artwork: Lu Baker

Unbelievable. The American company Maxar has suspended Ukraine's access to its satellite imagery services, — Military The company cited an "administrative request" as the official reason. This confirms that the trump administration, through the State Department, has banned American companies and commercial services from providing satellite data to Ukraine.

To be clear: this entire thing went off the rails because Zelensky made the catastrophically offensive move of pointing out the reality that Putin broke a ceasefire in 2015 and that when Vance talks about diplomacy, he can’t explain how Putin is a trustworthy partner. Zelensky simply spoke the truth, which Vance deemed totally unacceptable and offensive because he was trying to “litigate” the issue in front of the press. And then it unraveled from there. Just wild.
